Civil Servant Julian M.
Whatley Dies At Age 94
Butler Man Arrested On
Drug And Firearm Charges
On Aug. 9th, the Taylor
County Sheriffs Office and the
Butler Police Department con
ducted a narcotics investiga
tion near the intersection of
Charing Rd. and Knoltnn Rd.
The investigation led to the sei
zure of over 14 grams of co
caine, a small quantity of ec-
stasy, a small quantity of mari
juana, and a stolen firearm.
Kelsey Jamaal Raines, a 38
year old, black male of Butler,
was charged with Possession of
Cocaine With Intent to Distrib
ute, Possession of a Firearm
During the Commission of a
Crime, Possession of a Firearm
by a Convicted Felon, Posses
sion of Ecstasy, Possession of
Marijuana Less than One
Ounce, and Theft by Receiving.
Raines is currently out on bond.
This is a result of agencies
working together to help keep
our community clean of drugs.
Sheriff Jeff WatSon would like
to thank the Butler Police De
partment for their help in this
joint investigation that led to
the seizure of these illegal nar
cotics and stolen firearm.
In Reynolds, all council posts
are up for election, with the
exception of Post IV, currently
held by Tiffany Coker. Council
Post I, currently held by Danny
Perkins; Post II, Walker Moore;
Post V, Libby Bond; and Post
VI, Erie Barker, are up for elec
tion. Councilmen Danny
Perkins and Erie Barker are
ineligible for reelection, due to
8 year term limits.
There will be a special elec
tion, in conjunction with the
general municipal election for
Council Post III, to finish the
term of Chris Mason, who re
signed, There are two years
remaining in this term.
Qualif ying will be Aug. 17-19,
from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m,.

Friday was the first day of school for the Taylor County Recreation 10U Team, After
winning their district and state tournaments, they attended the World Series Champion
ship Games in Mississippi. They worked veiy hard to bring home a 2nd place trophy,
Also, these boys won the Sportsmanship Award out of all the teams competing in the
World Series. Mrs. Moncrief Taylor County Upper Elementary School Principal, recog
nized the ch ampions on the Early Morning Viking News Broadcast at school. We are veiy
proud of their baseball talent, as well as their sportsmanship!

Municipal elections in the Cit
ies of Butler and Reynolds are
scheduled for Tuesday. Nov, 2,
2021.
In Butler, three council posts
are up for election: District 1,
Post 1, currently held by
Amanzie Jenkins; District 2,
Post 3, currently held by Jake
Hopkins, who was appointed to
fill the unexpired term ofChas
Gassett; and District 2, Post 5,
held by Glenn Harris.
The qualifying fee for these
seats is $35, and qualifying w ill
be Aug. 17-19, from 8:30 a.m,
to 12 p.m. and I to 4 p.m., at
City Hall. The terms of office
are Jan. 1, 2022 to Doc. 31,
2025.

Thursday evening, Aug. 5th,
the Taylor Coimtv Develop
ment Authority, Taylor County Chamber of Commerce, City of Butler, Taylor County Sheriffs Office t Butler Police
Department, and Reynolds Police Department sponsored a community event to dedicate the new wall murals in Butler
and celebrate Taylor County’s National Night Out. A large crowd turned out to enjoy the festivities, which included free
food and fun for the whole family. The mural artist, Chris Johnson, and his family were on hand for the evening.

Qualifying For Municipal
Longtime Taylor County civil
servant Julian Monk Whatley,
94, of Reynolds, died Friday,
Aug. 6th, at The Oaks Nurs
ing Home in Marshal Iville.
Mr. Whatley served
Reynolds, Taylor County, and
Middle Georgia in numerous
capacities, including former
Mayor of Reynolds, Reynolds
City Councilman, Taylor
County Commissioner, presi
dent of the Regional Indus
trial Development Corpora
tion fRIDCl, president of the
Kiwanis Club of Taylor
County president of the Coun
cil on Aging, Citizens State
Bank Board Member, Trustee
of the Baptist Retirement
Communities, and as the first
Case Manager for the Com
munity Care for the Elderly
Program with the Middle
Flint Council on Aging. He
also served in the Georgia Na
tional Guard for many years.
He owned and operated sev
eral businesses in Reynolds,
including Whatley's Ware
house and Gin, John Deere
Agency, Dial Gas Company,
Battleview Antiques, and
Reynolds Manufacturing
Company,
Mr. Whatley was a member
of First Baptist Church of
Reynolds, where he was for
merly a Sunday School
Teacher, Deacon, and interim
pastor. He also pas to red Tay
lor Mill Baptist Church in
Reynolds and Hebron Baptist
Church in Sumter County.
He is survived by two daugh
ters, Debbie (Bob) Hvla and
Donna (Charlie) Lindley; two
granddaughters, Katie and
Madison Lindley, and his
brother, William Henry
Whatley.
He was preceded in death by
his wife, Sue, his parents,
Clifford Edwards and Mary
Monk Whatley, brothers, and
a sister.

Commissioners Consider
Feasibility Of Door-To-
Door Trash Collection
The Taylor County Board of
Commissioners is evaluating
the feasibility and potential
benefit of door-to-door trash
collection outside the cities’ lim
its. No vote has been taken
regarding whether or not to
proceed with such services. At
this time, a request for propos
als has been issued to solicit
offers from third party opera
tors. The County will review
and discuss whether any of
these offers are advantageous
for the people of Taylor County
at a September 9th meeting.
