Emily Hartley Selected As Mercer University
School Of Medicine Nathan Deal Scholar
Emily Hartley and former Georgia Governor Nathan Deal
Emily Hartley (Class of'2025)
Was recently selected as a Mer
cer University School of Medi
cine (MUSM) Nathan Deal
Scholar, announced MUSM
Dean Jean Sumner, M.D.
Nathan Deal Scholars are se
lected based on their strong lies
to rural Georgia, character,
leadership qualities, commu
nity involvement, and their
likelihood of serving in rural,
underserved Georgia after
their scholarship obligations
are met. The recipients receive
85-100% of tuition for up to four
academic years.
“The Nathan Deal Scholar
ship enables and supports stu
dents who want to return to
rural communities to become
outstanding physicians. These
scholars represent the highest
commitment to providing excel
lent health care to rural Geor
gians,” said Dr. Sumner. “This
scholarship removes a financial
burden of medical school debt,
which has been a perceived
hurdle for doctors going into
less populated areas. With this
support, students plan on prac
ticing quality medicine in the
small towns they know and
love,”
The mission of investing in
students from rural Georgia so
that they can return to their
hometowns virtually debt-free
and be trained to serve the ru
ral, underserved communities
of Georgia is what drew
Hartley to the Nathan Deal
Scholarship.
She knows the health care
struggles in these areas of
Georgia and hopes to someday
give back to her hometown
community by returning to
practice family medicine or ob
stetrics and gynecology.
“1 am very excited to have
been selected as a Nathan Deal
Scholar,” said Hartley. “It has
always been a dream of mine
to practice in medically
underserved areas of Georgia
so that I can give back to com
munities such as my own.”
Emily is the daughter of Ken
and Kristi Hartley and grand
daughter of Gerald and Linda
Parker, Glenda Hartley and the
late Ray Hartley.
“The Nathan Deal Scholars
will make a difference in the
health status of Georgians,”
added Dr. Sumner. “This schol
arship is one more way Mercer
is reinforcing its commitment
to rural Georgia.”
