The Thy lor County Board of
Commissioners held a special
called meeting Thursday, Dec.
16th to approve a pending so
lar project and a golf resort des
tination in the county.
The solar project was tenta
tively approved at the regular
meeting on Dec. 7th. and final
approval of the solar project
Memorandum of Understand
ing (MOU) was granted at the
called meeting, Commissioner
Robert Peacock abstained from
the vote, due to a conflict of in-
terest. Pending review by
County Attorney Eddie Davis,
no further action is needed.
Leeward Renewable Energy’s
solar project will be on approxi
mately 1,500 acres, west of
Mizell, off tbe Fall Line Free
way (U S, Hwy, 96),
The county’s Planning and
Zoning Board recommended
approval of a conditional use
permit for construction of a pri
vately owned and operated golf,
fishing, and hunting club. Fall
Line Camp (FLC). This is a
$40-50 million investment.
The conditional use also in
cludes allowing the maximum
height of buildings and struc
tures to be 60 ft, up from the
35-fl. limit imposed by the zon
ing ordinance.
The resort will be built on
properties currently ow-ned by
Campfire Development, LLC,
Lisa Holman, Michael and
Mitchell Watson, MW Enter
prises, LLC, Sandman Proper
ties, LLC, Richard Priestor,
Silvana and Rosa L. Pantoja,
David Brand, and Carter B.
Wilson.
The commissioners unani
mously approved the condi
tional use permit.
Initially, the resort will be a
private, members only, club.
There are plans to go public in
the future. The resort is ex
pected to create around 125
jobs and is anticipated to be
completed in Fall 2023,
FLC also plans to lease five
acres at the Butler Municipal
Airport for lodging and parking
for private jets. There will be
a ramp fee, and half of the ramp
fee will go to the airport. In
addition, there will be a staffed
hub at the airport for shuttles
to/from the resort.
A portion of land, w ith front
age on Henry Currington Road,
will be donated for a fire de
partment that will service the
resort and the surrounding
community.
There was some concern
about water usage from prop
erty owners in the area, FLC
and the Taylor County Devel
opment Authority have con
ducted research, and there is
an aquifer below the standard
water table. Most of the water
used in the area comes from the
the water table above the aqui
fer, and the aquifer replenishes
85 million gallons of water per
day,
FLC will have its own water
treatment and sewage plant,
and there will not be chemicals
used on the property. It will be
a “natural" golf course, and will
not use anywhere near the 85
million gallons of water avail
able per day from tbe aquifer.
During the construction
phase, FLC will need a 60-day
“grow in" period. More water
will be used during this time,
approximately 1,000 gallons
per minute, FLC will have
holding ponds to accommodate
the additional water usage.
Before adjourning, the Com
missioners approved a resolu
tion for certification that FLC
is developing in a rural commu
nity. They also approved a
resolution for FLC to obtain a
state liquor pour license for
consumption of alcohol at the
restaurant to be located on the
property.
