iVeeMg pew fe. DR. HOOTEN’S THURSDAY MORNING. FEB. 3. 1870. The Young Men'* Library Aeioelatlon— Some Suggestions. There is do institution in Atlanta, which, in proportion to the amount of money con tributed to it, is doing more good than the Yonng Men's Library Association. Not only is its present influence useful, bat its capacity (or good if perseveringly sustained, is beyond estimate. Atlanta is a new city. Its society is not yet matnred. In consideration of the age of the city and the recent settlement of its population, drawn from all parts of the Union, and from almost every civilized coun try in Europe, the efforts of the people of our oity to seeuro healthful, moral and intellectual progress is very notable. The Library rooms of the Young Men’s Association, are attractive to the resident aa well as the stranger. Though they cannot boast of sa extensive a catalogue of books os may bo found in older and moro wealthy cities, the selection of books and newspapers on the shelves and tables of the society, is creditable to the management; and the sys tem and order observable in their arrange ment are creditable to the good judgment and zeal of the polite librarian, who ever makes the visitor, whether lady or gentleman, feel comfortable and at home. It is rare that a so ciety, whose ability to pay for valuable services la limited, can secure as efficient an officer. An important precedent to permanent use fulness and large growth in influence is the possession of a fire-proof building of suit able architecture in all its details foi the pres* arvalion of the treasures of knowledg > and art of which the society proposes to become the custodian. Sacha bnilding will give an as surance of permanency, and, therefore. In crease the number of its patrons. Donations would more freely be sent to the society if it were known that the gifts entrusted to it will be preserved against accident from fire. The society ought to have more rooms for its use than it con now afford te rent. No young man, who will avail himself of the privileges offered by the Association, need complain that he is compelled, to keep off ennui, to resort to places of amusement of questionable character; while these rooms are open. But well os our young men have done in the inception of their enterprise, they can by a little united effort, not only keep the in' stitution in its present status, but greatly ex tend its usefulness. They should plan for perpetual progress, and more extensive use fulness. The institution may be made the nucleus around which sevefal enterprises creditable to the city and themselves may be collected, and yearly grow in importance. In suoh a building, many parties pos sessing valuable historical papers and docu ments and works of art, would be willing to make deposits for the enjoyment of the pub lic, because they would be assured of their preservation. Connected with the society there ought to be aa historieal, a scientific, as wall as a literary section. There is no place on the continent in and about which more in teresting historieal reminiscences centre. To the historical section of the Association, should be assigned tbs collection and arrang ing of historical memoranda, documents, maps, ate., and the marking, by memorial stones, of the places where toinarkablo events, incidents, battles, etc., took place. Sack collection and such mounments, before the ex piration of the present generation, would be- oome of immense value and interest to future historians and tourists. t yoitl.;. scientific auction might b^paigued ARY for the blind.
