^i’cekljj flcu) #ta. ATLANTA, GEORGIA, : DECEMBER 28. Edwin Booth U to bnild a handsome house next spring, in Mew London, CL Sebastian Seiller, an editor and lawyer, who was expelled from Germany for writing “ Casper Hauser," died recently in Hew Or leans. Miss Sarah E. Bussell, lately a reporter for the-New Haren Palladium, has become a law student. A correspondent at Greenville, Ohio, is in formed that Boston is the residence of Wen dell Phillips. Anna Dickinson has "a hard, political,” bearded look aboat ber. Mr. Theodore Tilton ceases to be editor of the Independent after the present week. His successor is not yet named. The Chicago Republican thinks the Demo crats are forcing the season sending forth John Surratt on a stumping tour so long be fore the Presidential nomination. They should wait at least a year longer. • The Southern papers have not yet ceased to speak about the-good health of Jefferson Davis. He has lately been amusing himself by delivering addresses to Sunday school In an Iowa breach of promiae case, the wo man swore that the accused had hugged her every night for several months, and Sunday nightsfuntil 3 o'clock in the morning. The industrious culprit was fined one dollar and costs. Jem Mace left Hiblo's because he thought he had too little to say in “As Ton Like It," the managers having declined to accede to hia re quest that they write for him a few additional lines to incorporate in Shakspeare's comedy. H. Guizot, now eighty-three, writes to a military friend, who was dead before the letter arrived, “I have four boys on the ramparts of Paris, and the - scraps wbioh now and again reach me from them, are such as give me con fidence." He urges the absolute necessity be fore all things of relieving Paris. Mis. Dr. Mary Walker was in Savannah at tho Ipst accounts *n route tor Florida. She proposes to establish her peculiar school of -woman's rights in the latter State. A Savan nah paper says her drees was of Confederate gray extending to her knees, the balance of her attire being a serviceable pair of bifurca ted unmentionables, terminating in a pretty pair of gaiter boots. Juarex having recently issued a pardon to all the Mexican “insurgents," Santa Anna, from his retreat in Nassau, N. P., retorts in a manifesto to the world, protesting against being called an insurgent by the “monster" Jaurez, and doses with: “I repeat—I repeat it with disgust—down with the monster!" Ber. Dr. Tyng, in the whole coarse of his life, has written but few sermons. He culti vated the habit of extempore speaking in his early ministry with great core and persever. anoe, and suoeeeded under many discourage ments. For many yean he has stood in tho front rank of pulpit orators. Tea Culture. Dr. Smith, of Greenville, South Carolina, has cultivated tea in the mountainous districts of that State, exposed to the frosts and ice of winter without injury. It.is his opinion that there is no climate obstade to its successful cultivation in the United States. U the ex periments now making in tea culture in California prove sueoessfnl and remunerative, it is believed there will hardly be a limit to the extent which the culture may assume on the Pacific coast, as well aa in the hijly regions of some of our Southern States. At a recent meeting of the Workingmen's Union of Hew York, the plasterers reported a disposition on the part of the employers to re duce wages, and stated their determination to resist. The masons and builders reported that the trade had been snocessfnl in the strike among the men employed at the Harlem rail road depot The Crispins reported that eight shops and three hundred men were on a strike. A SHARP GIRI,. A Clairvoyant on the Witness Stand. from the Portland Arina, December 10.) An interesting ease come before Judge Goddard yesterday, which attracted mnch at tention and excited considerable cariosity. A Mrs. Jones sued the administrator for medi cines furnished a man previous to bis last sickness. The daughter of the plaintiff was a witness and testified that she mode prescrip tions .while in a clairvoyant state, and ber mother purchased. and compounded them. They consisted principally of roots and herbs. There were many items in the account, consisting of various compounds and designed for. the cure of various ills to which flesh is heir. This daughter has been blind since she was fourteen years old. She is a fine-looking young woman, twenty- three years old, appears quite intelligent uud truthfol on the stand, ana testifies in a very becoming manner. She says when the pa Kent was brought before her he could hardly speak in an audible voice, occasioned by ul cers in the throat. She prescribed, and her mother furnished and compounded the roots and herbs. It seams that she know bnt lit tle of the medicinal qualities of herbs or roots, but depended on what she saw while gifted with what the 8cotch people were wont to call ■••seoond sight" On cross-exami nation she stated that she could see through * patient's skin the internal organs of the body. The Judge now began to open his eyes; for he possawes an inquiring mind, and seldom lets anything pass from which he con derive knowledge without examining it pretty olosely. He questioned the witness somewhat sharply, but she stood her ground well, and answered the questions the best she could. To sum up ber testimony in brief, she says sno can see a diseased liver, kidney.or any other organs, and on them the remedy is labelled which will restore them to health. Is is not neces- for she can examine him thousands of miles away. In foot, neither space nor distance obstructs her vision. ■ She can see all around this globe and tar away into our solar systems, and not only so, but she con see the worlds composing the universe. The above is not ex- actly what she said, but it might be naturally inferred from her declarations that no dis tance obstructed her view. This was a little too much for the Judge, bnt he nsed the wit ness kindly, and looked as if he pitied her hoi- lucinatiou. How much light she threw upon the scienoe (or art?) of clairvoyance is more than we know, and whether the Judge, with aU his thirst for knowledge, reeeived any new illumination is quite problematic. We fear he is an unbeliever still In his charge to the jury the Judge went for bock into the past and reviewed the history of clairvoyants. And yet he did not place much confidence in medicines inscribed by clairvoyants. The jury were out some three hours, and finally agreed upon a verdict, and gave the plaintiff $5. The sum demanded was $135, ana so the jury cut down the amount *130. This was truly a “compro mise verdict" with a vengeance. How to be Identified at the Banks. Apropos of a story told by its Hew York correspondent, the Philadelphia Press makes a espial suggestion as to the way in which aeton might be identified at banka when pre senting checks to be ashed. The story was that Jo. Jefferson not being able to get tho numej os a chock drawn to hia order, because nobody knew him, turned to the teller and Slij “aiS”'?.. 0 * v “ Winkle; “If my little dog Schneider was here lie would know me. me migration is that if the following aeton shonld find themoelvee in a similar nrrS WILD LANDS.
