MISS RUTH GRAY IS MARRIED
TO LLOYD A. WALKER. JR.
ATLANTA, Ga.—Miss Ruth Gray,
-daughter of Chaplain and Mrs.
Joseph A. Gray, became the bride
of Lt. Lloyd A. Walker, Jr., at a
ceremony taking place at 5:30 o’-
clock, Tuesday afternon, April 24,
nt the Little Chapel of Glenn Me
morial Church. The father of the
bride officiated using the double
ring ceremony.
The bride wore a gown fashioned
of white lace and net. Her long veil
of illusion tulle was fastened to a
coronet of Brussels lace. She car
ried a bouquet of white roses
showered with stephanotis and
snapdragons. She entered with E.
-Carlson who gave her in marriage.
Mrs. Glenn H. Corbin, sister of
the bride, was the matron of hon
or. Miss Lida Walker, sister of the
bridegroom was the maid of honor.
Roy Robinson was the best man.
The usher-groomsmen were Bill
Holt, Quillian Hamby and Bill
Moore.
The nuptial music was presented

_Much interest is centered in the
marriage of Miss Elizabeth Hancock
df Dublin and Augusta, to Mr. Allen
Chandler ivlalcom, Jr., of Athens
vnd Augusta. The ceremony was
quietly solemnized in the presence
<jf a few close friends and relatives
April 14, at eight o’clock, in the
Baptist parsonage of North Augusta,
with the Rev. J. P. Sheffield offici
ating, using the impressive ring
ceremony.
The bride was becomingly dress
-ed in a street length dress of navy
with matching accessories. Her cor
tage was of pink carnations.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. F. M. Hancock of Dublin. She
.received her education in the Dub

U. D. C., the Confederate graves,
World War 1 and also two of World
War II graves, Nat Pendergrass and
John Strickland, were decorated
w ith flowers and flags.

The first stop was in the park
where wreathes were placed on the
Confederate and Dr. Crowford W.

The march proceeded to the cem
etery whre they were met by Miss

Before leaving, the crowd assem
bled and the president of the U. D.
C. gave the children a talk on the
War Between the States, World War
TANARUS, and World War 11.
The U. D. C. Chapter appreciated
the interest shown by town people
in displaying flags for this Memori
al Day; also, for all who helped in
any way to commemorate the day.
On aeount of illness, the only sur
viving Confederate Veteran of Jack
son County. Thomas W. Garrison,
*x>uld not take part in the Memorial
Day parade. If he lives until his
u.'Kt birthday*- he will have reached
~nn one hundredth birthday.

wore a gabardine suit of dusty rose
with navy accessories. Her flowers
were a corsage of white roses.
The bride is the daughter of
Chaplain Joseph A. Gray, Army of
the United States, and Mrs. Gray
of Atlanta. She is the sister of Mrs.
Glenn H. Corbin of Cedar Hill.,
Tenn., and George Gray, United
States Merchant Marine, now serv
ing overseas.
Mrs. Walker is a graduate of
Druid Hills High School. At pres
ent she is a member of the senior
class at Agnes Scott College, and
will receive her A. B. degree in
June.
Lt. Walker is the son of Mr. and
Mis. Lloyd A. Walker of Atlanta.
He is a graduate of Boys’ High
School and attended Clemson Col
lege before entering the Army in
June, 1943.

At present she is employed at the
Augusta Arsenal.
Mr. JVlalcom is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. A. C. Malcom, Sr., of Athens.
He was educated in the Athens
schools and the University of Geor
gia, of which he is a member of the
Frank Hardeman Chapter Order of
Do Molay. He is a member of the
Junior Chamber of Commerce of
Augusta. The bridegroom is em
ployed as business secretary of the
Y. M. C. A. of Augusta.
The young couple will make their
home in Augusta until the bride
groom leaves, April 26 for induction
into the armed services.
Fiftieth Anniversary
For Married Couple
Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Howard, two
of Jackson County's best beloved
and prominent citizens, recently
celebrated their 50th wedding an
niversary at their country home on
Route 2. It was a quiet, informal
affair, but greatly enjoyed by those
who were so fortunate as to be
present. Mrs. Howard is the former
Miss Maud Lyle. Their many friends
extended happy congratulations and
are wishing for them many cele
brations of their nuptial date.

AT APPLE VALLEY
The April meeting of Apple Val
ley Woman’s Club met with Miss
Annie Hawkins, with 12 members
and eight visitors present.
Due to the absence of our sec
retary, we had no business meet
ing except a letter read by the pres
ident from Mrs. Miller.
We were fortunate to have Lt.
Mildred Dalton speak to us. She
gave an interesting account of her
experiences in the South Pacific.
During the social half hour re
freshments were served.

Stevens. Mrs. Hancock is the former
Miss Carolyn Stevens of Demorest,

Miss Page Stevens and mother have
returned from the hospital and are
at their home on Washington Street.

The Second Quarterly Conference
of the First Methodist Church was
held in the church last Sunday eve
ning. Before the conference a mes
sage was brought by the District
Superintendent, Rev. .J Foster
Young, who earnestly declared that
while the church is doing great
things, it must do greater things in
the future. Never must the church
lie satisfied with its efforts, but
must strive to expand and to at

Maurine Mielenz and her fiance,
Lt. Roberts Pendleton who is ex
pected to arrive early this week af
ter serving in the Pacific, parties
will fill the week leading up to their
marriage on Saturday evening.

entertained at tea at the home of
Mrs. Weed’s parents.
Miss Penny Mielenz, sister of the
bride-elect held open house from
eight to 10 o’clock Tuesday eve

Street for the couple.
Wednesday Miss Annie Camille
Arnold and her mother will give a
luncheon at one o’clock at Fay’s.

hearsal for the wedding, Lt. Pendle

Pendleton, will entertain the bridal
party and out-of-town guests at
their home on Riverdale Drive and
following the rehearsal Mr. and Mrs.
Peyton Jones will entertain at the
Idle Hour Country Club.

pects for a large crop of peaches this
year is very encouraging. A big

county, not only for commercial,

Col. George W. Westmoreland,
Lay Leader of the Gainesville Dis
trict Methodist Church, states that
the next meeting of the stewards
and laymen of this district will be
held in Jefferson, but the date has
not yet been fixed.
Messrs. A. A. and W. P. Frost
were in Athens Sunday to visit Ellis
B. Betts, who has been in the Gene
r-al Hospital of that city for sev
eral weeks. They report that Mr.
Betts is very cheerful, and if not
rapidly improving, he is holding his
own.

Mrs. W. A. Kieke visited at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Archer
on Route 3 on Sunday.
Judge L. B. Moon and J. L. An
derson were in Commerce Monday
night in the interest of a moving
picture for the Masonic Service
Centers and the Masonic Home at
Macon.
Grover F. Coker has been trans
ferred from Shoemaker, Calif., to
Hawthorn, Nev. He was in combat
service and was wounded. Since re
covering from his injuries, he is
connected with the war industry
that ships all ammunition to our
forces, hie is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Hoyt Coker of Pendergrass.

ley, Ala., spent last week with the
latter’s mother and sister,Mrs. J. C.
Dooley and Mrs. J. B. Dalton, at

der were visitors at the home of

day afternoon. Mrs. Ross is a niece
of Mrs. W. P. Boggs who lives with
her daughter, Mrs. Barnett. It was
a very pleasant afternoon for Mrs.
Boggs.
