Dr. Frank Folks was called to
Waite, town last night to see a wo
man on whom a house had fallen,
and found her terribly smashed
up. One thigh was knocked out of
place, while another leg was bro
ken in two places. In coming
home a wheel of the engine ran off,
causing about fifty yards of the
Uack to he torn up.

last night, for the nomination of
a municipal ticket and tho adop
tion of some measures for the rat
ification of the school bill next
Saturday, was well attended.

that some citizen who had called
the meeting explain object’of the
same. Carried.
It was moved by E. II. Crawley
and seconded that J. L. Sweat sx a

tees, appointed by the two sides of
the issue retire for consultation!
Carried. The commitees were com
posed of J.L. Sweat,G. R.Youm&ns,
E. H. Crawley, Warren Lott, and
E. McCall, for the bill, and Samue|
Williams,L. A. Wilson, J. D. Smith,
John Mallon and W. D. Hamilton,
of the opposition. (Note—These
gentlemen opposed the bill on
account of the high taxes and ad
mission fee contained therein, not
foi the purpose or intents, and
desired modification—Ed.)
After more than an hour’s ab
sence, the two committees reported
the following resolution which had
been previously adopted by the
opposition in caucus, with certain
changes in the ticket tor mayor and
council as originally proposed:
Resolved, That this caucus, in
meeting assembled, select a ticket
tor Mayor and council, who will
stand pledged to establish a system
of free schools at a cost of ^iot
more than 2£ tenths of one per
cent, to tax payers, and an admis
sion fee not to exceed four dollars,
payable quarterly in advance.
Be it further Resolved, That we
will meet the opposition on friendly
terms for a settlement of the School
bill, provided, they will support
the ticket for city officers here
with attached, who agree, and bind
themselves to recommend to the
Legislature such modification of
the present bill as will remove all
obnoxious clauses now embodied
in the hill:

Xangbty Tramps.
This town has been beseiged in
tl\e recent past by a regular army
of tranks, while, colored and spot
ted, ragged and well-dressed and
in all conditons. Last week they
raised some disturbances in the
neighborhood of Mr. W. M. Wil
son and Dr. J. H. Redding’s when
one'of them was bruised up by
running his head against an axe
handle that Mr. Wilson had iu his
hand. Some of them were arrested,
one we belive fined and the remain
der subsequently released.

passed through Waycross last
Thursday enroute for Green Cave
Springs, Fla. While here be ex*
pressed fears as to getting off of
the train—said he had been in
formed there was a band,.of so
called officers that would get pas
sengers into trouble, put them in
jail and besides detaining them
would make it cost about $30,00.
He went on to state that an in
stance of that kind actually hap
pened, to a men of his party on or
about December 23,1886. As it is
our duty to look into damaging
reports 6f this kind toward -our
town, and place tlio blame, if triie
where it Wongs; we would like to
know raoro about said affair, so
that weean explain and sivo Mr.
Chew satisfaction.
