We, the grand jury, chosen and sworn for the May term, 1882, of Burke Sup *rii>r Court, do here v ith sub mit the following general presentments : By appropriate committees we have examined into the affairs of the county, as dilligently as it was possible in the brief time allotted us. We, the committee, appointed to ex. amine the different offices and books of the following officers, beg leave to re port that we have done so, and find the Ordinary’s office in gool order in every respect; papers neatly filed and record ed. Also those of the Clerk of the Su perior Court, as well a* the County Commissioners and her iff. The loin- ty Court Judge, R. O. Lovett, makes a good sh wing of the ct nduct of his of fice, and by his official report shows that the cost of said court tor the past six months has been only $45 80 to the county, almost self sustaining, and we recommend its continuation. We re commend that the Commissioners em ploy an expert to make general index books for the record books ot the Ordi nary and Clerk’s offices. And that they furnish in addition to the regular deed books a chat'le mortgage book, for the Clerk of the Superior Court to record all such short time papers in, and that hereafter the regular r'eed and mortgage book he not encumbered with such records as cliattle and crop mort gages, and like short term papers. No hooks submit ted to us from the Notaries of the 60th, 62d, 66th, 68th and 69th Districts, and no hooks from the Magistrates of the 68th, 70th and 71st Districts. We find that the cost in some instances have not been itemized, as required by law, and call the attention of Magis trates and Notaries Public to these facts, and suggest that each procure proper fee bills. Committee on public buildings re port as follows : We find the jail in a fair condition, and we think safe ; but we recommend to the County Commis si mers that it should be kept clean ; also that it be u ed for county purposes only. The court house, we recommend that the blinds be put on the inside.— W e find the Clerk’s and Ordinary’s offi ces all right. We recommend that the County Commissioners not, to pay a cent to the contractor for keeping the sink in the court house yard clean, as he has failed io comply with Ids contract as we understand it; end further that the said place be used for ihe benefit of the public, and not allow it used principally by a few officials. THOS. J. BURTON, JA<L M. WIMBERLY, ROBT. H. CATES, AMOS P. LAMBETH. Commit'ee. Report of committee on Tax Re ceiver, Tax Collector and Jailor’s books; We have examined carefully the hooks of the County Treasurer and fmd them neatly and correctly kept, reflecting great credit on that officer. The 'f ax Collector’s book we find correctly kept; all money collected by him having been turned over to the County Treasurer. We compar ed carefully the Treasurer’s book with those of the Tax Collector, and can find no discrepancies. We find in the Treasury $2,365 52 which is about $1,200 less than at the commence ment of the May Court in 1881. And in view of this we respectfully sug gest to the County Commissioners that same rigid economy that has characterized their past administra tion. The Collector has collected and paid into the treasury $7,894 75Jeav ing uncollected about $550, of which amount the Collector considers $150 solvent, if this i* collected it will re duce the insolvent lLt to about $400 which in view ef the stringency of the times, is an excellent showing.
