FIST FIGHT BETWEEN
CAROLINA SENATORS
Id Senate Chamber Tillman

JUNIOR GAVE SENIOR THE LIE
During Debate on the Philippine
Question on Saturday a Disgraceful
Scene Is Enacted by the Two Sena
tors From Palmetto State.
Washington, Feb. 24—The Tillman-
MH aurin feud reached the raost sen
sational possible climax in the United
Stab s senate Saturday afternoon,
v.i: n MeLaurin passed the lie to his
< olleague and Tillman, quick as a
Hash, jumped over intervening chairs
and struck MeLaurin a stinging blow
with his list. There was a rapid ex-

change of blows at short range, the
two men clinched and senators rush

At present South Carolina has no
standing in the upper house of con
gress, both of the senators having
been adjudged by the unanimous vote
JOHN LOWNDES M’LAURIN.
of their fellows to be in contempt of
the senate. Neither is entitled to a
vote or to recognition until the senate
decides their contempt purged. Their
case has been referred to the commit
tee on privileges and elections and
the indications are they will hang
there for some time to come. Both
men entered formal apologies to the j
senate for their actions, but that does j
not change their status, nor does it in- !
dicate any change in feeling toward i
one another. Their apologies did not i
go in that direction.
Of course neither man suffered phy- ;
sieal injuries in the personal encoun
ter.
Tillman struck McLaurin a hard j
blow in the face, and it looked from j
the galleries as if McLaurin got in !
one or two upon the face of his an
tagonist before they were pulled apart, j
but Tillman thinks he was not struck, j
Everybody is expecting more trouble j
if the two men get together, for, as j
he showed in his statement to the sen- !
ate, McLaurin threatens an aftermath
if there is any repetition of the
charges that he has sold out to the Re
publican party. There is no question j
of the physical bravery of either man !
and nobody who witnessed the encoun- i
ter would be surprised to learn of ;
more serious trouble of the same kind, j
It all started over Tillman’s bitter at- j
tack upon the Republicans in his '
speech on the Philippines. He charg- |
ed that the Republicans had only been J
able to ratify the peace treaty by se- j
curing the vote of a senator through j
improper influences. This led to a i
heated colloquy between Tillman and
Spooner, the upshot of it being the
charge that McLaurin had, through
the potency of patronage, been won
over by the Republicans.
INVITATION WITHDRAWN.
Senator Tillman Did not Participate In
Reception to Prince Henr/.
Washington, Feb. 24. —The president
withdrew his invitation extended to
Senator Tillman, of South Carolina, to
attend the dinner given in honor of
Prince Henry of Prussia at the White
House.
It is stated that this action on the
part of the president was made neces
sary from the fact that it was due to
the occurrences on the floor of the sen
ate last Saturday. The senator from
South Carolina was declared in con
tempt of the senate. Senator Martin,
of Virginia, a member of the commit
tee on naval affairs, accepted an invi
tation in Mr. Tillman’s place.
The invitation was extended origi
nally to Mr. Tillman owing to the fact
that he is the ranking minority mem
‘her of the naval affairs committee.

BOY VICTIM OF RABIES.
Develops Hydrophobia From Two-
Year-Old Dog Bite.
Covington, Ga., Feb. 24. —Liddell
Childs, the 12-year-old son of Waiter
W. Childs, was suddenly taken with an
attack of hydrophobia several days
ago, the most alarming symptoms de
veloping.
The boy and his elder brother wore
out hunting on Wednesday last. Of
a sudden and without warning the
younger boy commenced running from
his brother. Ke crouched .behind a
log and pleaded piteously with his
brother not to shoot him. Almost im
mediately l>e was seized with violent
convulsions and commenced to froth
at the mouth.
Half carried and half dragged the
boy was finally got home by his broth
er, the convulsions continuing every
few moments on the way.
As soon as his parents learned of
the matter the boy’s father made im
mediate arrangements to take him to
Atlanta for special treatment. The
most serious fears are entertained for
the boy s recovery.
It appears that the child was bit
ten about two years ago by a dog sup
posed to be mad. The dog belonged
to a neighbor and was shot at once,
no symptoms of the rabies appearing.
The boy’s wound healed rapidly and
nothing more was thought of the mat
ter until his recent strange conduct.
Mr. Childs is a prominent citizen
of Newton county and has been mak
ing his home in Covington until sev
eral days ago, when he returned to his
former home in Newborn. It was at
this place that the boy was bitten by
the dog.

Va., Explode.
Norfolk, Feb. 25. —A 50-ton coal car
in the middle of a freight train on the
Richmond division of the Seaboard Air

the approach to the long Roanoke
river bridge on Sunday and knocked
down an entire span of the structure.
The engine and nine coal cars passed
on safely, but the rest of the train
plunged 40 feet into the deep water of
the river.
The tank cars, filled with petroleum,
exploded and set fire to the bridge and
the portions of the cars above the wa
