Female deputy overcomes assault

Sergeant Hannah Gay of the
Burke County Sheriff’s De
partment successfully brought
22-year-old Britney Thomp
son to the ground after she
struck the deputy twice in the
head.
Gay responded July 31 to a
call that a suspected missing
person was walking south
bound on Burke Veterans Park
way near Woodlands Road.
Gay found Thompson walking
south on the northbound side
of the parkway. As the deputy
pulled up to her, Thompson at
tempted to quickly walk away.
Getting out of her vehicle, Gay
initially attempted to detain
Thompson, but she pulled
away, according to the incident
report. Thompson then struck
the deputy twice on the top of
her head with an open hand.
However, Gay was able to grab
Thompson and take her to the
ground and handcuff her.
Thompson was found to
have an outstanding warrant
through Screven County for
failure to appear, stemming
from an original charge of
obstructing law enforcement.
Thompson was charged again
for obstructing law enforce
ment in Burke County.
Gay did not suffer any inju
ries during the incident, nor did
Thompson, according to the
incident report.

BURKE EMA REPORT
The Burke County Emergency Management Agency re
sponded to 107 patients’ calls during the week ending August
6. Of those, 77 resulted in transports, including 43 to Augusta
hospitals and two to other out-of-county hospitals. Thirty of
the transports were determined to be emergencies and 47
were non-emergent.
The agency also answered 12 fire related calls during the
week. They included one fire/smoke alarm, one outside equip
ment fire, four rescues, three trees down, one public service
call and two unspecified calls.
Deputy injured during
jail inmate incident

A Burke County deputy and
the nursing staff attempted
to administer medication to
inmate Oshay Sterling August
1 when he ran out of his cell
completely naked.
As three deputies tried to
gain control of Sterling and
return him to his cell, the depu
ties and Sterling fell at the en
trance of the cell. Once on the
ground, Sterling began to coop
erate, the incident report states.
One deputy hit his elbow but
did not suffer any injuries.
Another deputy suffered some
swelling to her left knee after
falling on the concrete floor.
She was transported to Burke
Health for evaluation.

Courtroom security was no
tified August 3 that a black fe
male entered the Burke County
Judicial Center with a weapon.
When a deputy approached
the woman holding a purse
and wearing a pink hat, she
immediately surrendered a
knife and was escorted to the
security office.
She was taken into custody
after a brief struggle, accord
ing to the incident report.
However, the woman refused
to give her name. It was later
determined she was 24-year-
old Leah Williams.
BCSO awarded grants
The Burke County Sheriff’s
Office announced August 4
that the Bureau of Justice
Administration (BJA) added
an additional $50,000 for the
$ 100,000 Rural Violent Crime
Reduction Initiative Grant it
was awarded in March.
The U.S. Department of
Justice’s Bureau of Justice
Assistance, through Justice &
Security Strategies, Inc. also
announced that it will award
the BCSO a $75,000 micro
grant for body-worn cameras
as part of a group of awards
being made to 265 small,
rural, and tribal law enforce
ment agencies for body-worn
cameras.
“I am ecstatic that the BJA
has seen fit to assist rural agen
cies that work strategically to
combat
violence in their communi
ties”, said Sheriff Alfonzo
Williams. “We are one such
sheriff’s office. It is my re
sponsibility as sheriff to ensure
that we have the requisite
tools, resources and personnel
at the county level to combat
the violence perpetrated by
those who seek to create fear
and inflict injury upon the in
nocent. It is always a win-win
situation when we can use state
and federal funding to help
shoulder the financial burden
on local taxpayers for safety
and security.”
Man with loaded gun arrested
during domestic dispute

Patrick Quick was arrested
for terroristic threats July 31
after a verbal altercation on
Knight Road.
According to the incident
report, Quick arrived at a resi
dence intoxicated to retrieve
some tools. While he was there
an argument ensued and wit
nesses say Quick pulled a knife
out of his pocket. Cell phone
video footage taken at the time,
shows Quick threatening to kill
a man at the residence. The
Burke County Sheriff’s Office
found him to be carrying a
loaded North American Arms
.22 long rifle pistol in his front
right pocket.
Vidette man arrested
for brandishing firearm

Jayden Tyne, 17, of Vidette
was arrested at the Sonic Drive-
In Friday, August 4 after all
available deputies responded
to a call that he brandished
a firearm in the parking lot.
A witness directed deputies
to Tyne who was amongst a
crowd of people gathered
after the Burke County Bears’
scrimmage football game. Im
mediately, Tyne favored his
right side and attempted to pull
his shirt down while deputies
spoke to the witness, accord
ing to the incident report. After
officers escorted him away
from the pavilion toward pa
trol vehicles, Tyner willingly
put his hands behind his back
when asked if he had a firearm.
Deputies found a Taurus 9 mm
gun and magazine loaded with
seven rounds in the waist of
his pants. Tyner was charged
with possession of a firearm
by a minor.
