Midville Garden Club springs back

The Midville Garden Club
is beginning a revival after
membership dwindled during
the pandemic.
During its initial formation
in 1949, twenty-two women
met in the members’ homes.
The group has met continu
ously for more than seven
decades, except during the
COVID-19 pandemic.
They have accomplished
many projects over the years
including, two published cook
books in the 1970s and another
one in 2009. Since about 2008,
the group has focused on
providing maintenance at the
historic Midville cemetery.
They also collaborated with
the American Legion and the
Lions Club in 2018 to partici
pate in the national Blue Star
Program, honoring men and
women who serve in the United
States Armed Services.
The national Garden Club
program began with the plant
ing of 8,000 Dogwood trees by
the New Jersey Council of Gar
den Clubs in 1944 as a living
memorial to veterans of World
War II. In 1945, the National
Council of State Garden Clubs
(now NGC, Inc.) adopted this
program and began a Blue Star
Highway system that covers
thousands of miles across the
Continental United States,
Alaska and Hawaii. Blue Star
Memorial Highway Markers
were placed along the way.
The Blue Star was adopted
because it had become an icon
in World War II and was seen
on flags and banners in homes
for sons and daughters away
at war as well as in churches
and businesses, according to
gardenclub.org.
The Midville Garden Club
also lays wreaths at the cem
etery in commemoration of
Memorial Day and Labor Day,
as well as providing support for
Midville’s fall and Christmas
festivities
The Midville Garden Club
is looking to rebuild its mem
bership from the 14 existing
members. They will resume
monthly meetings in Septem
ber with a new president, Leesa
Holloway.
Vice-President Valerie Sax
on said Holloway has some
great ideas the club moving
forward. “We are excited about
that.”
As the dynamics of Midville
are changing, the club has
seen an increase in members
who live in the area part-time.
However, membership is open
to anyone from the surrounding
area who has an interest in join
ing. They meet once-a-month
at the Midville Community
House. Anyone interested in
attending a meeting or finding
out more information should
call Saxon at 478-589-7612.

Iconic building up for sale
The historic 6th Street building, equipped with a sensational
loft apartment, is up for sale.

Anthony Leckey, known to
everyone as simply “Tony,”
owner of Boxwoods Antique
Market, is ready to start the
next chapter of his life.
Tony has placed the historic
building on 114 W 6th Street
up for sale, along with its
beautiful loft apartment and
long history. For many years,
the building housed the iconic
Goldberg’s Furniture.
Goldberg's, Inc.'s operated
for several decades before it
was dissolved. However, the
building has seen a few owners
since then.
In 2015, downtown Waynes-
boro celebrated its newest
business as Direct Furniture
Outlet opened in the former
Goldberg’s Furniture build
ing. It closed after a short time
and in 2017, two former Tex
ans, Rob and Jennifer Green,
opened Vintage on Sixth in
the building, offering a new
concept in antique marketing
by featuring items from 23
vendors. A family emergency
caused them to close after a
few months.
However, in 2018, antique
dealers Tim Mashburn and
Chris Gibbie breathed new
life into the old building with
extensive renovations. Having
had no residential rental space
in the heart of downtown since
the early 1970’s, the second
phase of their vision became a
ground-breaking concept. With
a second floor on the Goldberg
building, it made sense to the
investors to create a loft.

Tux Leckey
April 28, 2015 - August 20, 2023
Tux, beloved companion and longtime greeter at Boxwoods Antique Market passed peace
fully, Sunday evening, August 20th. Bom in Charleston, he was adopted by Tony at 12 weeks
old and joined him and his new sisters, Lucy and Lola
in a large log cabin hunting lodge, high on a hill outside
Atlanta. The perfect gentleman, Tux was sweet and
gentle with every breathe he took and left any "trouble
making" to his sisters.
Tux, Lucy and Lola bonded quickly and enjoyed
a comfortable and happy life; doggie day camp 2x a
week, road trips, camping, swimming, retrieving balls
from the pool accompanied by all the love they could
possibly be given. A brother, Joey, later joined the fam
ily and then Max. They enjoyed a calm and peaceful
home life together for many years. And occasionally
their very own rib eye steak (each) from Browns Sea
food or Good Day Cafe.
Tux loved spending time in "the shop", the family's
furniture stores in Atlanta and later in Waynesboro at
Boxwoods Antique Market. He spent many hours over
the years greeting customers and following them thm
the store, often finding a stuffed animal and dropping
it at their feet to see if they might play.
The family is thankful that God gave us the beautiful
gift of sharing our lives with this sweet boy. There's
something amazing and healing about the love of our "pets". And although we'll miss him
and remember him with tears in our eyes, we're so very thankful and blessed to have shared
our lives. Tux was predeceased by his sister, Lola Leckey.
