Page 2— Wednesday, November 1,2023, The True Citizen Dowtown public restroom project set to begin DON LIVELY The City of Waynesboro Downtown Development Au thority is now the owner of property in the downtown area. In early September, the DDA, in partnership with the Downtown Organization of Retailers (D.O.O.R.) closed on the purchase of the building at 103 W. 6th Street. According to Downtown Development Director Don Lively, the DDA had begun looking for a loca tion to eventually build down town public restrooms when the property became available. “I approached the DDA board of directors a couple of years ago with the idea of having public restrooms for the downtown. Our downtown has grown dramatically over the past several years and in speaking to some of our shop owners, and by visiting some other successful Georgia downtowns, it became appar ent that if we were going to continue to grow, our biggest need was public restrooms.” The DDA looked at several options before deciding on the small building that faces 6th Street, a few doors west of Liberty Street. The building had fallen into bad repair and the owner had no reason to keep it. Between the DDA and D.O.O.R. the funds were raised and the building was purchased. The building will be totally demolished with the demolition being donated by C & H Services, a local construc tion company. The DDA has also spoken to Aaron Redman of the Archway Partnership about the possibility of having University of Georgia engi neering students assist in the design of the restroom project. Mayor Bill Tinley, who is also a member of the DDA board, has given his complete endorsement to the project. “We have a lot of good things going on in our downtown and this project will certainly help us continue to grow.” According to Mayor Tinley and Don Lively, it’s the first time that the DDA has owned real estate since the board was established. The demolition of the exist ing building was tentatively set to begin on Monday, Oc tober 30th. Once the space is completely cleared, design and fundraising phases can begin in earnest. The Little Roy and Lizzy Show slated for Saturday An award-winning bluegrass duo is bringing its show to Waynesboro. If you’ve not yet gotten your tickets to the Little Roy and Liz Show, don’t wait — their down-home humor, family dynamic and high energy make for a one-of-a-kind perfor mance. The show marks the second in the Waynesboro-Burke Con cert Series’ current season, and is set for Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Burke County Office Park Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m. with a 7 p.m. show time. Little Roy and Lizzy are both award-winning artists several times over. Lizzy (Elizabeth Long) is a multiple instrument playing talent who Little Roy summed up with these words: “Pull a plank off the wall and she'll play it!" She began her musical journey on the piano then took up the fiddle, gui tar, autoharp, bass, banjo and mandolin. Entering Literacy Land at WPS Waynesboro Primary School held its first-ever school-wide Literacy Week, which ended with a parade of pumpkins Friday, October 27. Each Pre-K classroom decorated a pumpkin and students dressed in costumes inspired by themes from children’s literature. The Burke County High School cheerleaders and the Pride of Burke County Marching Band performed as the students paraded in front of their peers, family, and friends. The entire week was filled with fun educational activities to get students excited about reading. Little Roy started picking his banjo at six years old and has been entertaining ever since — as a musician, singer, actor and skilled story-teller. Together, the pair will be mixing bluegrass, country and Americana with influences from Earl Scruggs, Marty Stu art and Patty Loveless shining through. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Burke County Public Library in Waynesboro or by calling 706.526.5062. This show is sponsored by First National Bank of Waynesboro and Waynesboro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. \* rfj. W: MICHELLE. S Servic^Wanager ’M READY TO HELP YOU!
