lowing General Presentments : Our grat
itude is due to an Allwiso 1’rovidencj for
the manifold blessings bestowed on the
people of onr county, during tho pro,cut
year. Our rejoicings ovur Hicho blessings
would have been complete, had not reaper
“Death" invaded our immediate ranks and
taken from our midst, goo-1 and useful
men whom wo honored and respeoted.
With unfeigned regret have wo received
tho announcement of the death on Friday
the 10th inst, ol onr ranch esteemed ntirt
honorod fellow-eitizen Doctor M. D. C. XI
Summerlin, who if in life and health,
would have boon a member ol onr body at
this term of the Court, and by whose so-
lion* illness and suhseouent uotinnly
death we weru deprived of his wife counsel
and eo-operation in onr deliberations. In
Ills duath, the people ot Washington county
whom at ou« time ho so acceptably repre
sented lu tho hulls of legislation of our
Slulo, have sustained an irreparable loss,
whose patriotism’, geniulity, kindness ol
heart, and deeds of unostentatious ehailty
had beoornehousehold words with our peo
ple. In closo succession to this mournful
event, we wore onoemore reminded of the
shortness ot life and tho certainty of doutb
by the announcement ot tho death of tiani-
uel A. Duggan, a promising son of our
esteemed Foreman, John (J. Duggan, E«q ,
ou Saturday tho 17th inst., by which sad
event we are now deprived during the
balanoo of the term o| the prudent gui
dance and direction of our honored Fore
man. In view of these monrulu! events,
w» bow in humble submission to the will
of that Allwiso Providunoo, whoso decrees
arc miening, and whoso judgments are
righteous.
Lungungo is inadequate, to express our
heartfelt sympathies tor the two bereaved
families lu this, their hour of ailHoliou, and
It is our only privilege to point them to
that source of uufailing consolation which
is vouchsafed to men from the courts above.

cording lo the usual pructice have burm-d
tho paid county’s and Jury Horip pres-
mco ol the Treasurer aud of each other.
Tub financial problem having been sub
mitted to us by tho above named commit-
tee.whether its now advisable for the Ordi
nary to avail himself of temporary loans uh
he has done hitherto andi pay interest there
on, (which we find amounted the present
year to 400.00 aud Treasurer’s commis-
eions.) or to increase taxation to such an
aetent as to keep a sufficient amount on
h md the whole year around, to meet the
current expenses with cash. We recom
mend that tho Ordinary continue to use
his discretion in obtaining such tempora
ry loans as hitherto, whenever the necessi
ties ol the County Trt usury may require
it. Wo are fully convinced that theoourse
pursued by him in this matter has been
lor the b6st interests of our people, us in
years gone by, the practice ol hawking
and having to shavo county scrip has eu-
tailed mutual Iofhob upon the county nhd
her creditors. On the other baud, an ex
orbitant taxation would work hardship.
The finances ns managed by the Ordina
ry aud the system of economy inaugurated
by his Honor Judge HiDes inoutting down
Court expenses uugur well for n speedy re
duction of the county’s expenses, a com
parison of Court expenses, alone shows a
gratifying result.

The Cm Bit's Office
Has been thoroughly scrutinized nnd the
bqpks nnd papers were found neatly kept
and oorreot. Our attention was called by
the Clerk to 187 recorded deeds aud mort
gages in his office, and for which lib nan
received no fees for recording. We would
suggest to tho owners of tLeso papers to
editor them, pay tho requisite lees and
relieve the Clerk's desk of the oumbersome
file of papers which do not belong to his
office.

acres cultivated iu corn aud peas, will yield;
this j ear about -KHI or 500 bushols ol corn
and 100 or perhaps 125 bushels of peas.
The crop ol potatoes is very promising,
vegetables have been abundant iu sea-on,
Mr. Orr iulorms us that he used no lertili-
zels whatever, hut had employed an extra
hand, aud a horse was puiuhased, which
latter will sell lor more than was paid for
him.

notwithstanding the August freshets. The
damage has bet-u comparatively

specially called to the road:
1st. From S-mdersville to Biddlcvilk
from the 2 mile post to the Scott branch;
' 2nd. The road *roui S.udt-rsvillu to
Tennille requires widening, to whiub, at

3rd. The Knhdersville road to Oconee.
4th. The Railroad crossing at Francis’
bridge in the 94th.
