Many newspapers in the State, with
the prevailing aptitude to jump at con
clusions, are raising a hue and cry
against carrying deadly weapons. This
's not striking at the root of the matter.
The law must protect the life of the
good citizen, or it should allow him to
arm to defend himself. The law as now
maladministered binds the community
hand and foot, and permits it to be
come a prey io the abnse and insults of
ruffians. Perhaps if Coleman and oth
ers had been well armed in Macon, Ab.
Gibson would hot have been allowed to
run. amuck all day. People can’t de
pend on cowardly policemen and Qua
ker peace officers to protect them, and
the law should license them to exercise
their constitutional right to “keep and
bear arms.” No gentleman wants to go
about with a pistol buckled around him,
and ho shonld be allowed to carry it in
bis pocket. Not one bully in twenty
will attack a man who he knows to be
well prepared for him,—and if he does
He is likely to come oat second best.—
Notwithstanding the law the ruffian will
cany some kind of weapon.
Now we don’t carry concealed weap
ons, except on special occasions when
there is a possibility of needing them
for self defense, but we have heard of
too mahy cases of the peaceable, unarm
ed citizen becoming a victim to some
cowardly, revengeful enemy, to join in
the popu'ar craze against carrying
weapons.
The law allows a man to get drunk
and insult and abuse the community,
and if he commits a murder while in
that state he can find jurors to acquit,
him, notwithstanding their oath to ad-
m ni iter the law. Liet the law fine every
man one hundred dollars that gets
drunk, , t ud the greatest danger to the
community will soon be averted,, and
then perhaps it will be time to adminis
ter the law more strictly against carry
ing deadly weapons.
Whiskey is the cause of nineteen
twentieths of the crime in the country,
and yet there is no law against a man
putting himself in a condition to have
no regard for peace and law and the
life of bis fellow beings.

was not exactly total and was unaccom

was almost entirely lost, and pain set
in, which became very severe. Dr. T.
M. McIntosh has been called in and is
treating the case. At present the pain
is but slight, and the sight greatly im
proved, with fair prospects for a final
and full restoration.
