A severe snow S'orcn at Provifacotom, Maes., Thursday niglit did considerable -damage to ; shipping.' Some lives are reported lost. Washington Nathan, son of Benja min Nathan, who was murdered in New York some years ago, was shot in the neck at the Broadway Hotel by Miss Ma rion Ward, an actress. The wound is severe, but not necessarily dangerous, jealousy was the cause of the shooting. The British authorities have formally protested against the occupation of the island of Mataconga by. the French. The French Claim that the island was ceded to them in 187S, but the British clninr to have possessed it since 1826. The-affair will probably be promptly settled in a friendly manner. Pocahontas is to have, a monument, Up to the qresent time there has not been so much as a.tablet by the tomb at,Gravesend, where she lies, as certi fied by the; following entry in the regiss tor: “1619, May 31, Bebecca Wroife, wyffe of Thomas Wroife, gent., a Vir ginia lady borne, was buiied in the phancel.” Trri: Georgia Pharmaceutical Associa- ciatiou met in Savannah on Tuesday, aiid the junior drug clerks are haying a chance to poison a few unsuspecting customcis all over the State. “Itoll on fhou deep, dark, and blue-pill-mbn, roll.” A lfEvisioNAKY court inarlial called at his special request lias either viridica- •ted or whitewashed Gen. A Great Hardware. House.—That Well , known firm, Messrs Oarhart k Curd, of Macon, have a card in another Column, which speaks for itself. This house has a long established reputation as. the leading hardware men jn the. south, jmd their name is synonimoris with honor and fair dealing. . Bead their card and give them a call. Those popular gentlemen. Mcssrs Jewett, Orr and Saulshuvy will be be. found wit}i them. • • U.’vr Clothing and Hats.—Messrs Win- ship & Callaway, that old and popular olothing house, of Macon, has a card in another column to which we call espe cial attention. They have this spring a very large and elegant stock, and can suit everybody, with new clothes at won derfully low prices. Onr genial friend:W. Pitt Baldwin, late of Houston County, is still with this house, and will • be glad to give all his .friends jUs—in the very best goods, most Btylish cuts, and specie basis cost. Give them a call for yonr spring clothiug and hats. We have taken frequent occasion to call attention to the fact that the conn- ' ty press of this state is unsurpassed by that of any state in: the Union in every thing that pertains to character, stand : ing and influence. Our weekly jour nals are. not only a credit to the state— they are an element of strength, and growth and greatness of the, common wealth.; and they bear perpetual testi mony to the fact that Georgia lias far outsripped her southern sisters, not on ly in substantiaPprOgress and prospers ty; but in more'difficult solution of the political problems that have sorely vexed and hnirrassed her. In this mat ter the weekly press of the state have been prominent in action and iu judg ment.—Coistiiuiion. Radicalism: is now in its dying spasm in South CarUina, and the bastard’ monster is likely to be troublesome even in the; hour aud article dr detith;. -The ■ district : attorney of the United States court threatens to apply the iron clad test path to all the jurors iit the ap proaching court in Charleston, which will cause the juries to be composed exclusively' o£ negroes, and many of the. best citizens of the state are to be tried for political offenses. The emergency would seem to suggest the remedy, of of holding that- district attorney to a strict personal responsibility for his acts. We have had-enough of these radical outrages, and. the convicting of. innocent citizens before- prejudiced juries and ou the testimony of perjured There is a time when forbear ards the infamous pimps of •securing power ceases to be a virtiie. The days of these rascals will we hope eorae to an end ou March 4. 1S81. portionmen', Georgia will be entitled to about three hundred. There are also one hundred and fifty supervisors to be appointed, of which Georgia is entitled to four. Already there have been sev eral applications for these lust named appointments. In Dublin, on the 22d nit., a sad af fairoccuicd. A white boy, about six icen years of age, one James Hutchin SOD; with a negro ‘ of about the same age, .was looking at a self-cocking pistol fn the hands, of the latter. Suddenly, thp .weapon was discharged,- and the ball entered young Hutchinson’s heart, killing him instantly. The ne gro boy has, .since the fatal accident, lost his mind. The Marietta.' Journal tells of t shocking tragedy. It says: “Mrs. George Scroggins; a widow lady, living near Powder Springs, who has several children’ missed her ten-year-old boy Thursday mon ihg, and after.a diligent search she found him hanging from a loft iu the stable dead. Evidently he had attempted to climb through small opening, into the loft, liis foot slipped, his head caught on the inside of the plank, leaving his body dangling in the air by the neck, and being una ble to extricate himself from his peril ous position, life was soon extinct. He had been dead about two flours when he was found.” Two robbers aftifcked'Mf. Thos. Ad ams, of Barnesvillc, within two hun dred yards of the public square of the town, on Thursday night last, and pe- remptoily demandedi his money. He had.with him a very small pistol, with two barrels loaded,. which he fired at his assailants, and then] successfully beat a retreat. He thinks they were tramps, who wero laying in wait to rob him. The North and South Bailroad has at last reached the corporate limits of Hamilton, Harris county, from Co lumbus. The number of little negro children cremated iu the interior of the State through, carelessness is really; startling. On last Monday evening Dipjt. Walker, colored,-living ou ; the place pf Mr. H. 0. Walker, seven miles from Dublin, left his three little 1 children in the house iu charge of their older sister, about twelve' years of - age. Soon afterward the house took fire and the girl ran out, leaving (he children in the house, where 4fley Wer6 ! burneiUup. 1 ' 11 , Medical Association tlanta on the 6th . of May-- This is ^e.of the largest, if.no.t The largest; medical association in the. wjQnld, On the 6th of May the Sonthern ;Baptist Conyenrion is,in the same city. Much ofjtlie corn that conies to Macon is raised on these swamp lands. If the county, would construct a good read from the city through the swamp it would be a source of great benefit and profit to the agricultural interests of our own immediate people,” There are at present one hundred and five-persons charged with various crimes in the Atlanta jail Several of these, however, are from other States, confin ed far safe keeping. Possibly the “bulls” are. in league with the corn sellers of the West, and ho; e, with frosts and freezes, to back them, to convince the “Cottontots” one time more that tt will be wise to plow up the corn and put in more of the “money crop.” Succeeding in this, they will place themselves in position to “bull" the com markets very effect ively next spring. Not only so, but they will learn in due time just how the medicine works, and if advisable they will align themselves with the cotton- optionists in October and become rear ing “bears.” A downward, fluctuation is just as good as any if only a fellow is on that side. The Only inexplicable feature of the whole scheme is that the planters should in any circumstances play in the foie of “bears,” They may like the fun ik> well as to pay the price cheerfully. Whether they can afford it It must be a wonderful business, what T ever may he said to disparage ic. It supports ever • thing, so the philoso phers say. What the Jetties are Doing for New Orleans.—Mr. Smalley, the Nt-w York Tribune's correspondent-, \ wrote the other day from Port Eads a fall de scription of the Mississippi jetties, and remarked: “The advantage of the im provement to commerce is incalculable. In the one item of cottbii freights the saying is one dollar : a' bal^, which in a single year amounts to nearly flic en tire cost of ihe jetties. To resize how much the jetties .have already done for the commerce, of New Orleans one has only to sail along the river front of the city; where I counted last week no few er than one hundred and twenty large square-rigged sailing vessels and eigh teen ocean steamers.
