The hunt for him was not of the wild
exciting kind to be expected in such a
case,—only after some difficulty the
game was discovered walking up and
down by the swamp in a very mysteri
ous and restless way, having been c riv
en from his lair by the high water. He
seemed not to see his pursuers, who,
seeing he did not run away, at once
stopped, and after consultation, Alfred
Lane, an intelligent ahd courageous
colored preacher, was selected to ap
proach the hideous savage, whose ter

the croaking of the frogs, and the hoot- ’

Alfred approached and spoke to him,

however, he succeeded in attracting his
attention, but he appeared hot to im

he utter in response. As a last effort,
Alfred, seeing that hunger was express

this he gazed wistfully at his interroga

that would have melted a heart of ada

and was entirely naked; except that
around his nCck he wore a calico string
to which were, attached four live snijils

: Now, before going any further, I wish
you.to - understand that F. is a very
sice man; fought equally as well during
.the war as Mate’s dog Genter did Hicks’
bear in Macon some time ago; iiras on
Gov. Colquitt’s steff, had two horses
shot from under him..in one fight, and
the third horse ran Sway with him (to
wards the Tear,)>and, did not stop run
ning under ten miles. I think F. got
a plenty of that tight, and-I ;mnst; say
his hbrse “pidledprelty well on the bit.”
I saw him retreat'during onr hunt in
not very good order, of which I will
wake mention after awhile.
"We all left home in double buggies,
with- guns, saddles, provisions, etc.,
packed away, and upon reaching Vien
na and hearing that there was some
danger of yellow fever down where <we
were going, we all felt rather gloomy
until F. remarked that he had heard
that whisky and mustard seed mixed
was a sure remedy, and advised that we
should lay in a supply. It was readily
agreed to by all and one vate over, so
we dispatched F. for the “inedicibe.”
After leaping Y. about five miles
F. proposed we should begin to “heel”
ourselves against yellow feyer. Well,
Mr. Editor, I never saw a man take as
good care of bis health as F. did.
We had a very bright freedman along
with us to do onr cooking, and the first
night we stopped with a very nice aDd
wealthy gentleman who was to join us
in our hunt, and who very unfortunate
ly took our cook to be a white man.—
About twelve o’clock that bight some
one rapped at my door. I got up and
opehed it, and F. walked in. Bays I,
What’s the matter?” F. would not
saj anything for some time, and I saw
he was sntich ruffled and i'-?d-eyed. Fi
nally he ripped and blowed, and swore
he intended to go back home, that he
was just as white a man as - any in the
party, and he wonld be d—ceased if he
couldn’t prove it. Upon investigation
I found that Mr. C. nad assigned onr
cook and F. to the same room and bed.
After quieting F. down, I advised him
to go to a. negrojiouse out in the cor
ner of the yard and-get the begfoes to
furnish the boy quarters* which he did,
aDd on his way back, Mr. C.’s dogs,
(which were many,) got after F., and
pushed him so close that he had to
mount the horaa-rack. I felt right sor
ry for hun. I thought I never saw the
moon shine brighter in my life, and to
see F. in his night apparel astride the
rack, beat all the ghosts and hobgob
lins I ever heard tell of. Well, F. stay
