GENERAL PRESENTMENTS Op the Grand Jury for the May Teem 1879, op Houston Superior Couut.. We the Grand Jurors for the county of Houston, selected and'sworn for the 1st week of the May Term, 1879, res pectfully submit these, otrr general pre sentments. We, through appropriate committees, have examined into the af fairs bf ottr County, and report as fol lows: ROADS AND -BRIDGES. We find the roads and bridges in good order, with the following excep tions: The rbad leading from Henderson to Hawkinsville at Big creek, known as Brown’s Hill, is in a dangerous and al most impassable condition, and we again call the attention of our commis sioners to it. The bridges at Houston Factory. Limestone creek, Slappey’s Mill and crooked bridge at Dry creek (or vibe versa,) hre needing repairs; also, the fords at Thurmond’s as well as Gray’s mill, and the causeway at West bridge; to all of which we call the attention of our commissioners, and urge them to attend to tflfese repairs without dtelay ■ PUBLIC PROPERTY. We find the Court House in good re pair, the jail in good condition, cleanly kept, and the prisoners well provided for; but would recommend that it be ceiled overhead. The Poor House is in good repair and the inmates well cared for by the keeper. RECORDS AND FINANCES. We have examined the records of the county officers, a toll find them all neat ly and correctly kept: The Justices of the Peace bf the 769, 887, 928, 619, 500, 970, 542, 541, and 432 districts failed to hand in their dockets as the law required. Also, all the Notaries Public nud Ex-Offibio Jus tices of the Peace, cicept that of the 771st district. The County Treasurer’s books show a cash balauce on hand of (§5,228 14.) five thousand two hundred and twenty- eight dollars aud fourteen cents, and the county out of debt. • In view of this flattering state of the county’s iinnu cial affairs, we recommend that the tax es be reduced so as to cover only the necessary i xpenses of the conntv. The Tax Collector reports $539 15 collected on tax executions of 1877, and he Las paid out the same as follows: To County School Com’r. $205.00 * * State 185.63 “ County. 148 52 $539.15 On tax executions of 1878 $320.50, which amount is now in his hands, L-ai- iug a balance of tax executions of 187b nncollecU-d 997,Oi. Rid. to credit- of county; 819.00 Leaving of Ins salary to tie paid by the county $381.00. In commou with many others of our citizens we had been led to suppose that the civil Costs accrueing to the Judge of this cohrl were much greater than they really are, the whole sum of theso costs collected is only $218.00, while ot those uncol lected not more than $100 are upon sol vent parties. Taking this fact into ^consideration, and believing that this court results in great saving to the county, under the law ns it is, we fix the salary at twelve hundred dollars, as it has beoi heretofore. She was born on the 13th of May 1813, afid was therefore in her 66th year. She joined the M. E. Church in 1834, and was a consistent member till death. She had great Christian faith, and under a sense of God’s superintending provideiicfe, was habitually resigned to His will. Her last husband’s death, whieh Oeourred a few years before her own, was the Occasron-bf her Spirital improve ment, and tended to prepare her for her own end. She told tlie writer then, at the time of his burial, that she felt it a call to her, and that'she would seek to be ready when her time should come. She was a kind neighbor, firm friend, and well beloved by aH who knew her. She was one of tnb few remaining links which connected the present with the past generation; and afforded an excel lent example of the sterling integrity aDd true benevolence, which the age in which she was raised and educated/ Wes. more prolific, perhaps, than the pres ent. .
