Some of iTsENTEnpBises and Business Men.—Boat Building, etc. Last Friday we awoke in the “wee sma’ hours” for a drive to onr lively neighbor town. The moon soon de serted us, aud at West bridge we were guided almost solely by the light which was gathered up and reflected by the sand which has recently been hauled upon the old rotten ccrduroy. It now makes a fust-class road, and we hope the floods will not sweep it away into the labyrinths of jungle and mack be low. We would Ue’-e suggest that- when the county can spare funds "this road ought to be built considerably higher arid some wider, and a new bridge will soon be needed badly. The embank ment and abutment on -the south side pf Big Indian ought also to be restored and improved. At Limestone creek an attempt to cross the elegant new bridge by the twinkling star light, resulted in the ne cessity of a back out, for the abutments were not yet completed. As the old bridge is considered dangerous for neavy loads, and the approaches almost impassable in bad weather, the new bridge should be put in use at once, es pecially as it has been completed nearly three weeks. Some of our HawkinsviUe friends re quested us to get after the county offi cials about the roads, and urge their be ing put into good condition. We no ticed that the road in Houston was in first-class order, and would be made goi d with a little work and grading down of hills in two or three places, but at Buck creek, in Pulaski, the road was misera bly bad,—very steep, rocky, and badly washed. So we can say to our Huwk- insville friends this proverb: “Physi cian, heal thyself.” The only other matter of note were the elegant improvements being made by Mr. James E. Laidler at his planta tion three miles this side of Hawkins- ville. We reached the city in time for breakfast,.which was obtained at the Seal borough House, a convenient, neat and well arranged hotel, which is well kept by Mr. B.F. Editor Home Journal— Cotton is openning, picking has be gun and the sullen thud of the cotton basket is heard in the land. It sounds glorious. Since our last visit Messrs. D. C. Joiner & Bios, have erected a very handsome two-story building of brick with iron trimmings. A new jail is being built by the coun ty authorities. It is of brick with iron cages, and will cost only some three or four thousand dolars. The county Is also building an excel lent iron bridge across the Ocmulgee river, which will not only be an honor, to it, but of immense importance to the people. The government is building a steam snag boat for cleaning out the river.— It will be about 7 5 feet long, and a very stout concern, with steam cranes, etc. Mr. B." B. Woods’ new boat is at a standstill, awaiting the engines and ma chinery. It teems to bo a neat and serviceable boat. We noticed one or two neat residen ces going up,' and the stores in the new brick hotel are being completed. We found Brother Woods, of the Dis patch at his office, ns genial as ever, and his assistant, Mr. Beverly, qmte busy.
