WORM SPECIFIC
OR
VERMIFUGE.
THE
SYMPTOMS OF WORMS.
/pUE couptenance is pale and ieaden-
■I colored, with occasional flushes, or
a circumscribed spot on one or both
cheeks; the eyes become dull; - the pu
pils dilate; an azure semicircle runs
along the lower eye-lid; the nose is ir
ritated, swells, and sometimes bleeds;
a swelling of the upper lip; occasional
headache, with humming or throbbing
of the ears; an unusual secretion of
saliva; slimy or furred tongue; breath
very foul, particularly in the morning
appetite variable, sometimes voracious.
SMI which the -most
.• - productive partioiulies at this point,
consists of a strip of land running some-
jrlint irregularly nearly northeast and
southwest across the northern end of the
State. It .averages about ten miles in
width, and has been traced 260 miles in
length parallel with the Line Ridge.—
■\Vhite, Lumpkin and Habersham conn*
ties embrace the richest deposits, so far
as now known, but the limits oi mining
lu-c gradually widening. The presence
«f gold here lias been known from the
earliest times, Clieroki e Indians were
the occupants of the territory when
white settlement first began, and they
were accustomed to seek the gold for or
namental purposes, and to dispose of it
in barter to less fortunate tribes. E\ 1-
■ ‘ dences of tlVeir 'mining still remuiu, but
are insignificant. llie methods adopt
ed by the first white settlers,, and in
vogue until recent * years, were very | a S na " * n 8 sensation of the stom-
Thde, consisting merely of washing out a( *> at oth f, rs - entirely gone; fleeting
- - - - pains in the stomach; occasional
nausea and vomiting; violent pains
throughout the abdomen; bowels ir
regular, at times cdstive; stools slimy
not unfrequently tinged with blood
belly swollen and hard; urine turbid
respiration occasionally difficult, and
accompanied by hiccough; cough
sometimes dry and convulsive; uneasy
and disturbed sleep, with grinding of
the teeth ; temper variable, but gener
ally irritable, &c.
Whenever the above symptoms
are found to exist,
DR. C. McLAXE’S VERMIFUGE
will certainly effect a cure.
IT DOES NOT CONTAIN MERCURY
in any form: it is an innocent prepara
tion, not capable of doing the slightest
injury to the most tender infant.
The genuine Dr. McLane's Ver
mifuge bears the signatures of C. Mc-
Lane and Fleming Bros' on the
wrapper. :o:

passed through this trough from end to

traverse cleats, with or without the aid
fury. It is said that the first piece

Jed to this deposit, and was pick-
f.in 1799 by Conrad Reed, a boy
red in Cabarrus eouuty North
It Wiis as Luge as a smooth
a, but wus sold to a silversmith
Afterwards much larger
jumpkiweire found, one weighed twenty-
eight pounds, according to tradition.—
- This excited so much attention that ex
ploration’was begun, and the gold trae.
’ ,ed routuward until the borders of the
Cherokcd territory in Northern Georgia
. yrere reached, and the prospectors be-
5 gan to enCrOi'ch upon the reservation,
Protests from the Indians auturallj fol
' lowed, and Georgia sent a large police
force to keep back the invaders, but it
was of little avail." The rush to the
mines was much like the stampede to
the Pacific coast iu 1849, and reckless
and dissipated men from all parts of the
country flocked in, prowled about the
woods, set-up log lints and shauty gro-
c ries on all the s'rdoms, and paid no
respi\t o the rights of the Indians, or
any dtia else nuable to defend tLem.—
Even tbp United States troops were
powerless t-» keep 'he lawless hordes
-west'.ofthfe Chestatee, and here as else
»here the discovery of gold was the end
f Indian po: sessian and aboriginal sim-
licity and charm.
• These dayR are known as the period
of “the -Intrusion”—one of the two
dates'from which the mountain men
reckon all eveuts; the other beiug “the
].to war.” Fiudiug that no protection
of the Indians by the police force was
feasible, the State iu 1830 adopted the
Indians, territory and al), and consiitu-
,te$l‘lierogibn a county culled Chero-
*keo, out of which several small couuties
have since been mado. Then the min
eral lands were divided up into forty-
acre lots, and put up at lottery by the
"■-teg One of these lots, on the Y«hoo-
iver— No. 1052- now a part of the
id Company's property, had already
i celebrated. It was 'within the
ervution, but men used to creep
; to it at night and carry home a
meal bag full of dirt, out of pliich they
would pan from twenty to forty dollars
next day. The -instant it was ascertain
ed that an.old farmer down iu the cen
tral part of the State had drawn this
priz> ; ; shrewd specula iors put off post-
lias! o to buy it from him.
It soon came to be found here, as
elsewhere, that- geld was not to be pick
ed np in twenty-eight pound lumps ev
ery day, nor did the bushel of soil pan
ont a double eagle. The worthless, la
zy, and dissolute majority of the eaily
horde of invaders gradually drifted
away, while only Hie small minority of
new-comers, whose accession was of
real value to the community, staid.—
The population, like the dirt, was .‘low
ly panned out, and the current of event*
Carried the dross away. At present the
mines are largely o wued by corporal ions,
or by private capitalists who are not
K-pidcuts of the district. Only two of
the companies however aie represented
in the New York Mining Board, if I am
rigliily informed. It was found that as
the gold occurred neither in extensive
placers, like those of California, nor in
indestructible quartz ledges, the meth
ods of mining in vogue elsewhere wou’d
not answer here if the best results were
to tee otained. The inventive genius
and practical knowledge oi those inter
ested were therefore set to woik to de
vise the best means of meeting the case,
and it was speedily found that the talis
man which'alone would open the riches
of the hills to human use was water.—
So far as this mere fact is concerned, it
could hardly be called a ‘discovery;’ but
but the utilization of the ir'ea, and Un
practical methods by which the enorr
mous power power of this natural agent-
lias been put under the miner s control,
no doubt in longs to the credit of ilie
splepd'd development of the industry
during.the litc years and the glowing
prospects it now holds ont.—Karuesl i«-
