EDWIN JH IRTLS, Editor & Proprietor, THIS PAPF.B IS BEAD EYEST WEEK BY OSB THOUSAND FAMILIES EK THE BEST SECTION OF GFOBGIA. «T= tliURSDAY EVENING,SEPTEMBER 25 Cetewayo, what a pity, couldn’t get away-fob!) Now is Hon. Peterson Thweat’s time to persecute our legislators. Tee Zulu king is captured and that country js nndor England’s feet. The deaths from yellow fever in Mem phis this year foot np about 375 to date, The greatest trouble with the Comp troller-General and Treasurer in their difficulties was that they couldn’t be resigned. We have another large batch of new advertisements of which we are forced to defer special mention until next week. It is now thought that the legislature will adjourn by the first of November. The present adjourned term has lasted Fevout.v-three days up to date, which in eluding the last session makes 115 days. Wanted—at Atlanta, a Comptroller General, Treasurer, Keeper of the Peni tentiary and Commissioner of Agricul ture. Only honest men need apply. The prompt manner in which the press has denounced, and the vigorous, though tardy, action of the legislature in regard to the corrupt practices of the Stale officials, will greatly strengthen the Democratic party iu Georgia. State Treasurer Ben froehasbeen im peached by the House for converting to his own use the interest on money of the State deposited in certain banks. The Hen ate will proceed with the trial at an early day. The question now is, “Can the Leg islature make Treasurer Reufroe’s secu rities who divided the snoils, and the will laud transferees who were the real swindlers, disgorge? It is respectfully and reverently sug gested that as soon os the State efficc rs who succeed those removed or impeached go into the capitol, the Governor s'art a revival and Sunday school amoug them, and keep a sharp watch while he prays and teaches. J. C. Hannon & Co.—This new dry goods house, at the old stand of Morn's & Ware, Second street, Macon, is tne that steps foith into public favor. Mr. Banuon lias been for many yeais head clerk in Wuxetbaum's retail department, and is not only thoroughly posted iu the business, but is a gentleman of the most pleasing address, and universally popular. With exquisite taste Mr. B. has selected a most beautiful stock of goods, and his display of dress goods especially, he is confiden t cannot be ex celled, if equalled, iu quality and low prices. Mr. B. is a son-in-Liw of that esteemed citizen and President of the Southern Railway and Steamship Asso ciation, Mr. Yirgil Powers. See the card of this firm in another column. THU GOVERNOR AND THE COR RUPT crnciALs, There seems to be a disposition in the state to hold Governor Colquitt di rectly responsible for the wrongful acts of the Comptroller General, Treasurer, and Keeper of the Penitentiary.. We — — FORT VALE 3 sa — Editor Home Journal- We have had rain enough and to spare,, and the :louds look this morning like we would have a continuation of the same. It knocked our open air m eting „ into the church, where it is still pro- havo long believed m the Governor’s gressicg with good high Christian character and peisonal purity, and we cannot believe without positive evidence, that he has been io any manner criminally connected ‘ with the* transactions which we have so'freely denounced as being disgraceful to the State and deserving of prompt and im partial punishment. We ? lliink, howev er, that the Governor has been strange ly remiss in his duties as custodian of the honor and interests of the common wealth. It is more than passing strange that he should not long ago have dis covered the guilt of Goldsmith and Ben- froe, and himself instituted measures not only to correct abuses, but to punish them, especially as it is his duty, impos ed by express statute, to join the Treas urer-in making arrangements with good banks for depositing the treasure for the best interests ot the State, and not for the private gain of the Treasurer and his confederates. There is little doubt that the recent investigations at Atlanta have been largely imbued with a spirit of hostility towards Governor Colquitt’s whole administration, and no means left unturned to discover something that would reflect directly npon him, yet he has passed the ordeal, and yet nothing to his dishonor has been developed. It is only a matter of regret io his friends that he himself should not have been the moving spirit in the accomplishment of a much needed civil'service reform. To a certain extent he must bear the re sponsibility and he cannot shirk it. HO, FOR THE FAIR! BBB - ill being accomplished. Mr. Aaron Sommers a prominent mer chant of our town is lying quite sick with typhoid fever, The crossing on the dam at Gray’s ‘ IOHS r ‘ L3ErwIS - mill will be completed in a few days. LEWIS, Nolens Yolens, THE STATE HOUSE FRAUDS Things look even worse in Atlanta than we could imagine. Goldsmith and Benfroe attempted to resign. Murphv, Benfroe’s clerk, who secured the Gov ernors endorsement on the bonds of the Northeastern Railroad. has resigned, aDd now Nelms and Dr. Janes have ten-) dered their resignations. This is very ugly. Do they confess their guilt? Ii' these officers have proven unfaithful we hope a resignation will not prevent their full exposure and punishment.— Dr. Janes has made a splendid officer in many respects, but if his accounts are not full and correct, he mnst go, We cancomme.d officials wherein they de serve praise, but we have no sympathy with fraud. Dr. Janes says he can pro duce the vouchers for every cent receiv ed and paid out by him, and we hope or the credit of the much injured State, and of himself that he will do so,—but bad he not best fight it out on that line, and does not a resignation amount <to a confession? In Memorials. Died, on Tuesday, Ang. 26, 1879, Fannie Corinne, daughter of J. M. and M. J. Gray* at the age of 9 years, 11 mos. and 19 days. Little Cora was tne delight of her pa rents and relatives, being ever willing and ready to obey them; a favorite with her playmates, to whom she was ever kind and affectionate. Her illness was of short duration; only Thursday before her death she was a bright and cheers ful little girl; but the grim destroyer, in the shape of bilious fever came, and quickly did he do his work. Though it is but natural for her pa rents to grieve at her departure, let them not do so, as those who have no hope.
