The display of flowers was superb It was made principal’y by Mrs. H. M. Hollzchiw, Mrs. Geo. EL White, Mrs. T, M. Killen and others. In the-department of Home Industry we cannot speak too highly of Mrs. J, L. Houser, who entered 199 distinct arti cles, among them 4:1 kinds of preserves, 46 kinds of jellies, 28 kinds of pickle. 19 kinds of cordial, 22 kinds of jams, and many other articles, Mrs W. L. First National Bank.—This bank lias long betn a most, popular one with our people. No better place can be found foE doing your banking business. Mr. L C. Plant, the President, and; Me. W. W. Wrigley, the- Cashier, are well known to our people as most courteous, prompt and honorable business men. Bead their card. New Boot & Shoe SSoke,—Mr. John Valentino, so well known to many of our readers has, changed his business, and now has a first class boot and shoe store under the Telegraph and Messenger building, at tbeTJorner of Second and Cherry Streets.* He has a complete stock of the very best goods.and can suit all in quality and price. They almost completed one well last week when some wretch threw a pole i»to it, and they had to bore a new one. Thanks.—Messrs Schneider & Star- owski, of Hawkinsville, have our thanks for a lot of their splendid wine-pure juice of the grape, without sugar or any other adulterations. It was presented us through Dr. M. S. Jobson who ex hibited it at our county fair but did not enter it for a premium, as there was no class for sour wines. Major. E. H. Ezell has placed us un der obligations to him for his bushel of fair potatoes that did’nt quite take the premium, but they were very fine ones, as our four year old will testify, and are certainly worthy of “special men tion.” Jacobus & Co are always the first to reduce the prices in dry goods if a chance presents iiself. —tf. We hope our friends in Houston will still oontinue to write to us for Sam ples and prices, as we will cheerfully give them. Jacobus & Co. Houser, MrsM C Hook, Mrs F C E'her- idge, Mrs J E Hose, Miss L’zzie Kuntz.,. Mrs T M Killen, Mrs C N Bountrce, Mrs J G Davis, Mrs S Bunn, Mrs PC Smith, Mrs. Wm Bi-uusen and Mrs C C Duncan . Besides there was a large num ber of entries made of meritorous arti cles which space will not permit us to enumerate, but which were worthy. We acknowledge our inability to give this department one half the notice it de serves. We honestly believe no state fair in Georgia ever surpassed it. In the department of ladies handicraft the exhibit was one of very superior merit. We must especially notice the largo and handsome displays made by Mrs G H White, Mrs. W H. Norwood, Mrs Duncan, Mrs Cater, Miss Durant, Mrs. Cobb, of Macon, Miss Florine Cul ler, Miss Lila Whitehurst, besides beau tiful articles exhibited by nearly a hun dred other ladies. In the garden and orchard depart ment Mrs H H Hollzclaw, Mrs C N Kountree, Mrs A Marshall and others made fine displays of vegetables, com prising scores of varieties. Judge J H Bose had a fine display of fruits from his excellent orchard. Mrs C N Bur- nambad a fine display of garden seds, as also had Mrs. C N Bountree. We alluded last week briefly to the ag ricultural department. Judge C N Eountree’s display wps immense. He had about 150 articles of farm produc tion on exhibition, including 14 bales of forsge cl different kinds. Dr. M W Havis, Judge Hose Mrs. A. Marshall, S L Speight, C A Thompson, B M Da vis. and others also made large exhibits. THE JJXSTEtCT BANNER Was won by the Lower Town District, though the Upper 14ch made a strong contest for it. In the poultry section, the display in number and merit was large, espe cially those of Judge Bountree, P M King, Dr. M W Havis, Mrs. J. L. Hous er, J H Taltou and others. In horses and cattle the largest displays were made by Judge J H. Hose, W F McGehie, Jno Martin; C'N Eoantree and Col U M Gunn. Wehave been forced by want of space to omit many names whose interest and zeal deserves special mention, and have .only been able to name some of the largest exhibitors, in the different deportments. CaJlie Branson’s pets, a sheep, cats, dogs, fowls, etc., comprising a “happy family” attracted universal admiration The Earnest Workers had a refresh ment starid oh the ground and we are glad to learn were liberally patronized. They certainly deserved it. We cannot speak too .highly of the skill, energy and zeal of the worfy pres ident, Dr. M.W. Havis, who labored for weeks.mgkt and day for the suc cess of the fair. He was also ably as sist by the other officers and a potion of the executive committee. Bond* Boynton & Co.—This', firm has opened in Christian’s old stand next door to F. S. Johnson’s Sons. They have a splendid, new stock of groceries and provisions, which they will sell to suit the times, They say they will not be undersold, and invite the people of Houston and adjoining counties to try them. They are reliable, clever gen tlemen, and worthy of further acquain tance and patronage. W, & E. P: Taylor.—This old, and well known firm has long stood in the front rank of the fnrnituve trade in Georgia. They have just got in. a mag nificent new stock of everything in their line, which they will sell at the very lowest possible prices- They are per fect gentlemen in every respect,, and we 'call particular attention to their card, r J. W. Bice & Co.—This sterling firm is still at Hopson’s old stand, Triangu lar block, with a larger and more com plete stock than ever, Mr. O’Gorman, the junior has just returned from the East, and with Mr. Rice, who lives in New York; has just bought a stock that for asaouat,.quality, variety and price, is rarely seen in the South. That well known and popular gentleman, Mr. C. A Caldwell, is still with this house, and our fair readers may depend on being faithfully served by this firm. Bead the largo advertisement in anotner col umn and call on or confer with them. Geo. W. Burr—Mr. Burr is still at his old stand on Cherry Street where he has a splendid stock of stoves and house furnishing goods. Having bought his goods before the recent advance in pri ces he will sell at very low prices. If you want anything in his line, he will serve you faithfully. See his. card.
