ifgj Home Journal, ^xibOALS. T HURSnAYETKSIXG,NOVi:MHER 0 A SPLENDID PREMIUM Ah p A VALUABLE PRESENT. SOW WHEAT AND OATS. Now is the time for sowing grain. TV e urge our farmers to put in a large area of wheat and oats. But don’t do it in a careless manner. Select some of your best land, manure liberally, pre pare well, get the best s§ ed, and pnt it in in the best manner, If this is done you cannot sow too much grain, and it will pay as much net profit as any crop you can raise, and with far less trouble, outlay, labor and risk. The latead- rance in the prices of alLkinda of gram, caused by a largely increased demand for exportation to England, indicates that provisions will be costly next year; We have perfected arrangements to give all our*subscribers, old as well as ones, who pay strictly in advance, .ears subscription to a splendid agri cultural and household paper. This will be giving them two good papers a\ the price of one - Premium paper j and sueh being the case, it is high time jg not only a good one.bufc a high toned, pliable one, consisting of eight pages, sod they will receive it twice a month, jt ie also published in the South, and is more largely read than any farm paper in the South. This offer begins at flBC e, and will end tbe first day of Jan- jjjjjy next. In addition to the above „ e will present all wbo subscribe by or before the 15th of Novomber with a P0 pj of “Legal Faot3 and Forms," an invaluable little hand book for farmers and business men. We are making these great inducements to cash ash lers only, and hereafter noname will bo entered on our hooks unless the sub- tcrip tion is paid strictly in advance. Col- leotiug subscription accounts in many jjistajjces, is too slow, troublesome and expensive a business to be renumera- five, and we are determined to do a cash business if vre don’t get more than four bundled subscribers. We l»ope *11 of our old subscribers nnd many new ones will oome up at once, pay old scores, if any,and renew. jgy- Don’t forget this, and be sure to loll all your neighbors about it. Ou tbe first of December we will take out a lot of advertisements and very largely increase tbe reading matter in The Eomb Journal, jftgyWe return heartfelt thanks for the liberal patronage we have recived in the past, and assure them that we try harder every day to prove ourselves wor- ty of it. Edwin Martin. Fresh Mules.—A large lot of mules just arrived, and for sale by. Wh. Brunson. Wasted* I want to buy 300 ew® Sheep for which I will pay a good price. Address in o at Montezuma, Ga. Iw. S. S.,Taylor. “Fatheb,” said cur little four year old t he other day, “did God make ev erything?” Wo answered “yes, dar- li*g.” • “Well, then, didn’t yon soy the men in New York made your pistol?” Of course we caTed, and made a tedious and unsatisfactory explanation; but then how many consistent theologians .are them in the world? •w«: Need it. Please pay, what. You owe i Tjm.HojreJournal. Dr. M. S. Ji>3son,'—Dentist, will be ■at his office m Perry from the list to the .15th, and at Hawkiusrillo from the. 15th to the end of each month.— tf. BLACKS FE8.TIFIZE&* Messrs Ashley & Spe er, solo mana gers fertile Southern States for Black’s Fertilizer, were in town Tuesday. Mr. B. H. Gates is manager for Houston .*nd we have heard several who bought formulas from him last spring, speak iu ihe highest terms of it. It is certain ly cheap and said to be very effective, being certified to by many of our best -citizens, Those who have not obtained farm rights should ca’l on Mr, Gates at Perry at once and seoure them.—It. Hon. Peterson Thweat was in Perry Tuesday, and made ns a calk He came to find out what we meant by saying Borne time ago that he was persecuting •the Legislature. Of course we .didn’t -.remember. But jesting aside wo found him a very pleasant old gentleman of Biity; and wo dcubt not he made an ef ficient and faithful officer when he was Comptroller. General. The unveiling of the Confederate ■monument in Macon wasa grand thing, .and the address of Honorable Thomas Hardeman was universally conceded t 0 be the greatest and most successful ef fort of his life. It was the very highest grade o eloquence. ->-•-« When you go to Hawkinsville be sure &o call on Daniel Rhodes. —tf. To Strop Makers.—1§ first class ■Whiskey barrels for safe by J. W.. M ann. <*■*>¥> Gen. pjli Warren was a member of the Legislature from Laurens cojjnty, in 1831.. our farmers were deciding whether they will be sellers or buyers of bread- stuffs, On the o ther hand it is likely that next year the largest acreage of cotton evu« known will be planted, and the crop may very nearly approach six millions of bales. In this case the price will drop to six or eight cents, and disaster will be universal among planters, en tailing another decade of financial dis tress on tbe South. The thoughtful, earnest, industrious farmer can make plenty of wheat to feed hfm.and oats to keep his stock, b eaidesa little to sell and help him along at the time when he worst needs a few dollars; and by good culture can then make plenty of cotton to almost break him if tne price goes below the cost of produc tion, or to secure handsome returns if it ranges like it has this season. Whatever turn cotton may take, and its crapriciousness is too well know to need much comment here, the farmer who has plenty of small grain for his own use and a little to sell is not going to be forced to buy much corn at a, dol lar and a quarter a bushel next sum mer. Now, in practice, let us apply a lesson to every man who has fifty acres to the plow. No matter what the size of his farm is, let him put ten acres to the mule in wheat, ten in oats; ten in corn, and twenty in cotton. Even on poor land: if he will prepare, fertilize and cultivate well, he may make a hundred bushels of wheat, two bunded of oats, one hundred of corn and seven bales of cotton, besides peas, potatoes, celton seed, ebufas and other patch crops, On good land ho can make ten bales of cotton, and the cotton money fo a good manager will be at least half profit, at ten cents a pound; for bis other crops will pay nearly all expenses except the gathering and making of the crop. We love to see fat mules aud horses, good hogs, cattle apd poultry, cheerful, healthy men apd women and hearty, tow headed children; and wherever you go you. will find them at the house of the man who rais speefc, of provisions and provender at home, aud the sheriff is never on yisitirg terms of intimacy (profeesionable) with that family.
