This Rooster will do the Crowing atpiMBERUK Tl„ '» *t » greatmnny seraces in flip L°.rg»> cities. Instead of sending messengers from one 'person to another, instruments ar* placed in private houses, and the occu pants, by merely presting a knob, can summon a policeman, or give an alarm in case of tire or'call a messenger to do any .spi vice may be required. The principal company in New York which controls such a telegraph system, is the American District Telegraph Com pan’-. • The boys in tl is e mpsmj’s ampl y linvemany duties to perform which a«e not required of (lie Western Union boys,-and they therefore have a great many things to learn before they can be provided wlib work. When the hirer of a District instrument calls fora messenger, the boy can never know what tie may be wanted for. He may bo told to bnrry for a physician, he may be given a package for delivery, or a bill to collect, or bo may be pent by . a broker to deliver stock or to have a check certified,—in fine, his duties ore too varied for me to name them all. lyhew it is, remembered about 4,500 ' .District instruments are now in uso in New York, and that, 1,513.265 messa ges were delivered by the District boys in llieycnj ended September 30. 1877, pi me no! ion of tlie manifold services required of them can be formed. - It is easy to see that an inexperinced and nnskillfnl messenger in such an em ployment would only prove himself a nuisance to the public and an injury to th“ company. Every boy therefore, employed by the American District Tel egraph Company is put into a training school and this school is an interesting one. TJio school-room is provided with wooden benches, like those found in . old-fashioned district Fchools, but the instruction given is entirely in regard to the bnsiucss of the company. Every candidate for a place must Know how to rend and write, before they can be put into the school. It is of course nec essary for he boys to know the situation . of every street in the city.- A large map of the city is | laced before them, with the streets mo iked on it, but willi- ont- their nanes. The teacher points out the different streets to Ins pupils, ..puttthey are required to name lhem. In this way a messenger boy soon nc- ; rpires a more com) lete knowledge of the eilv’s thoroughfares than many an old resident can boast of. Tn one part oftheroom are telegram inetrnim i tssucb as the company uses, aril the boys are taught how to send an receive messages MACON, GliOBGli Stewarl’a old Stand, noar Jones’. D. The American District Telegraph Company employs on an average 55o boys who are distributed throughout the city amoDg twenty. three offices. Each office has from five to eight boys according to its location, and every boy is expected to. serve ten hours a day. In some of the offices, constant employment cannot be found for all the boys during the time, and one form of-promotion is to send a boy to an ‘‘easy district.” When a boy arrives at bis office : n the morning, he goes to the sergeant, who notes if he is in rime or not. Then he puts on hi? uniform and reports to the manager, who ascertains whether or not bis hands pro clean or his hair is neatly brushed.
