A conflict is threatened between
the British government and the
colonial government of Austrailia,
with the race issue as a cause. It
has often been said that the Uni
ted States is the only country in
which there is a prejudice against
the black man, yet the news which
comes from Australia . indicates
that the same prejudice exists in
the island continent, only in a
stronger degree. “This is a white
man’s country,
on which the
campaign in Austrailia was
and now the issue has been carri
ed into the commonwealth con
gress. A bill has been introduced
to restrict future immigration to
white people and to provide for
the removal from the country of
much of the black and yellow la-
bor now there. It is the purpose
of the bill to prohibit the immi
gration of the “aboriginal natives
of Asia, Africa or the islands
thereof.
Joseph Chamberlain, seretary
of state for the colonies, has ob
jected to the legislation for the
reason that it might give offense
to friendly powors, but it is inti
mated that the proposed legisla
tion may be enacted despite im
perial objection, and the matter
will then be brought to an issue.
