A glass globe, placed on a metal stand, is nearly filled with liquid composed of luminous marine microbes. There are two tubes running from the globe, and through these a supply of air can be sent to the interior when the light grows dull, the effect apparently being to revivify the mi crobes. The light from this lamp will last for several weeks without renewal of the illuminating medium. Restore Table Tops. Driving a Mill by Spund Waves. An interesting scientific toy, the action of which is explained by the theory of sound waves, has recently attracted attention in England, Mr. Bergen Davis, having observed that a small cylinder, closed at one end, if placed in a sound wave, will ar range itself perpendicular to the wave . and begin to move in the di rection* of its own axis, arranged four such cylinders on a rotating mill, ’the closed end of each follow ing the open end of its predecessor, like the cups of an anemometer, and then placed the mill in front of an organ pipe with its axis of rotation perpendicular to the sound wave is suing from the pipe. The long, tall birds, such as wad ers, usually hava abort tails. On the other band, birds with , short ! egs have extremely long tails. Like great number of such things in the living, ’hurrying.world about us, this goes without our taking any no tice of it. Even those who note rarely stop to think of the reason. All the variations in bird struc ture have taken place to fit the bird for some special zsode of .life, and thus we have the wide difference in appearance. Wading birds have long, ::eatherless legs and get their living by waiting in the Bhallow water for fish and crayfish to come near enough for striking. Their pursuit of their prey never depends on their power qr flight or sudden turning in midair. The swallow and the nighthayrk, laving to depend upon catching swift moving insects, have both de veloped extremely long tails. The tail is used as a rudder, and by fit these birds are enabled to perform wonderfully quick sallies from side to side as they sight their insect orey. Such birds, gaining their liv ing'wholly in the air, have small and weak feet, as they are used exclu sively for perching. A kingfisher, which gets its living by plunging into the water, lias a good sized tail and small feet. It is probable that herons and other long legged birds use their legs and feet as rodders, as they are stuck straight out behind. Indeed, all long legged birds seem to be rather heavy and clumsy fliers, while those with small feet are graceful in the air. Often the shape of tho tail lias a great deal to do *ith tile manner of a hawk’s hunting. A large red tail ed hawk, with its broad, medium length tail, gets its quarry mainly by soaring over Open bits of mead ow land. A sharp shinned hawk takes its quarry by flying rapidly through underbrush or timber, and surprising it. This is possible be cause of the long tail which can be used with good effect in suddenly changing course. It is a curious fact that the pres ent session of congress contains no negro member. With the exception of a brief period from 1887 to 1889 this is the first session in thirty-two years when this has been the case The first* colored man to be sent to congress was J. Willis Menard of New Orleans, who was elected to fill a vacancy in 1868. In 1870 Hi ram R. Revells took his scat in the senate, the first negro to be seated in that body. Blanche K. Bruce was the only other negro to • enter flie. senate. Boy Flndo Rich Mine. What is believed to be one of the richest copper deposits in the world was recently discovered through boy selling pretty rocks to an assay (office at San Diego, Cal. Several weeks ago a small boy came into the office of Colonel Robbins, an assayer of San Diego, with some "pretty” rocks which he wanted to sell. • The assayer gave him a few nick els and took the rock. Examination showed the ore to he almost pure copper streaked with silver. The boy had disappeared, but the assay er kept a standing advertisement m three papers for several weeks',and finally located the boy and also his father. It was founej^that the ore came from about twenty-five miles below the Mexican line, and the boy’s fa ther, Antonio Feliz, Colonel Rob bins and J.
