The Savannah News complains
that peaches are not grown for mar
ket m the counties near that city,
though “in years gone by, when
country produce was brought to
market in wagons end carts, Savan
nah received quantities of very flue
peaches from Bryan, Tatuall, Bul
loch and adjacent counties. She
getB none from these sources now.”
Fire was terribly destructive in
several cities last Sunday. In Pat
erson, New Jersey, five hundred
buildings in the business portion
were destroyed, the estimated prop
erty loss being $8,000,000. In St.
Xiouis, Mo., a hotel was burned, and
eleven people lost their lives; At
TUberton, Ga., ten stores were burn
ed, the estimated, value of the prop
erty destroyed being about $140,000.
United States was introduced
congress.
It is proposed that Cuba, if agree
able to the people thereof, shall at
first become a territory, and after
ward a state, with all the rights and
privileges of the present states of
the Union.
There are differences of opinion on
this proposition, among democrats as
well as republicans, but all agree
that there miuet not be forcible an
nexation,
It goes without saying, however,
that among the dominant republi
cans, the only bar to the forcible
control of Cuba* is the solemn decla
ration of congress that in forcing
the island from Spanish tyranny this
country would not do more than* as
sist the Cubans to establish their in
dependence
Just why there should have been
a different policy with Porto Rico
and the Philippine Islands many
thoughtful people fail to compre
hend. Certainly Cuba is more de
sirable as a possession, or a part of
this government,, in a commercial
sense, but why tho moral obligation
to do right is made any stronger by
a promise, men who really desire to
do right cannot understand.
That Cuba will eventually become
annexed to the United States is ac
cepted as true, but it is not proba
ble that Uuban consent will be se
cured until the people have gained 1
experience through ,the existence off
a republican form of government.

One of the oldest and best farmers
of Houston county has written us as
follows concerning the withdrawal)
Hon. J. Pope Brown from the
contest for the governorship;
I am proud of what you said
about Hon. J. Pope Brown. I, too,
would have voted for him’if he had
been a candidate, and-1 want to tell
him that lam glad that, ho prefers
the Holds that had been his father’s
bebt friend, rather than be governor.
am always proud of our young
men that will farm. I knew Brown’s,
father, and his grand-father, and
they were among the very best far
mers of their day and time.”
The same letter also, contains com
plimentary mention of The Home
Journal, which we hope our readers
will pardon ns for reproducing:;
“I wish to say here that I have
taken the Home Journal all the time
since its first issue, and I think it is
better new than ever before.”’
The editor is grateful to this aged
friend, and will strive continually to
merit such kind commendatibn.
An appropriation of $6,415 is ask
ed for to pay the expenses of the
senators who attended the funeral
of President McKinley. No item
ized bill has been presented, but the
money is asked for in a liirap sum.
In all probability an itemized ac
count would not look well in the
public prints as a statement of fu
neral expenses. Nevertheless, the
people would like to be informed
how the senatorial funeral delega
tion managed to spend $6,415 in so
short a time.—Savannah News.
