Claud News.
T. A. C. Meeting.
By Billy Bender.
politics are getting ripe, and from
the general .talk Houston will be
blessed with a yielding crop.
Most of our farmers have fiinshed
planting their crops and some have
commenced chopping cotton, while
some haven’t got a stand up, on ac
count of dry weather.
An exceedingly heavy rain fell in
northern and western portions of the
communijy last Thursday afternoon,
and did considerable damage to
farms and farm lands. The bridge
across the public road leading to
powersviile was destroyed, and the
road was rendered . impassable at
that point.
A select crowd of pupils and
friends of Lake View school, under
the superintendence of Prof. John
E. Stripling, enjoyed a tbhfry and
picnic at the Houston Factory Sat
urday, May 10th.' Most of the at
tendants left early in the forenoon
in a two-horse wagon and buggies
and reached their destination in due
time. After visiting new scenes,
fishing and other amusements, din
ner was spread by the good ladies,
and plenty of ice-cold lemonade was
furnished, and each one did his
share. After dinner was over they
repaired to an empty house, where
they enjoyed a warm dance until
about 5 o’clock, when they began
making preparations for their home
ward journey, each and every one
well pleased with the day’s pleas
ures, except the fellow who got his
head bumped. We are indebted to
Mr. Emmett Woodard for several
conveniences extended us, and de
sire to thank him for his kindness.
Eev. A. A. Garrett filled his regu
lar appointment at Fellowship Sun
day, and preached a good sermon to
a large and attentive congregation.
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. McLemore
spent Sunday with his brother, Mr.
J. W. McLemore.
Miss Kate.Adkins of near Perry is
visiting relatives and friends here.
Mr. Lewis Retires.
A Large Oattle Ranch.
Mr3. Ben Clarke Holtzclaw en
tertained the Thursday Afternoon
Club most delightfully on the af
ternoon of May 1. Every one
knew what to expect—a most roy
al entertainment—so the mem
bers were out in full force, and
qliite a number of invited guests.
On arriving each guest was met
by. little Miss Clifford Powers—a
dainty picture indeed.
In the hall we were served with
that most delicious drink, fruit
nectar. The cut class service was
so dainty in all its appointments
that we felt as if, all together, this
was a drink “fit for the gods.”
The hall and parlor were so cool
and the mingled perfume from
the different cut flowers was so
refreshing to mind and body that
one wished that “this would last
forever.” There were the sweefc-
melling pink, the grand LaFrance
rose, and the matchless Marchel-
neil. .The dining room was gor
geous in its dress of crimson and
old—roses, roses, roses. There
never was a more beautiful sight
than the table with its burden of
golden Marchelneils, with just
enough ferns to add their .dMicate
tracery to the whole. Handsome
cut glass vases were- filled with La
France roses. Everywhere the eye
rested there were roses. No words
of mine can express the beaty of
the scene.
Most • delightful refreshments
were served.
There was only one thiug lack
ing. There should have been s
poet present, or some gifted wri
ter, a Frank Stanton, for in
stance, who would have made this
entertainment famous with his
glowing pen.
Mrs. Holtzclaw is indeed a
charming hostess, and we vote
that she entertain again, during
the “Time of Roses.”
Editor,. Protem.
Mrs. Will Moore entertains
the club Thursday afternoon, May
22. She requests that all of the
ladies bring their work, as there
will bo no game.
Mb. Jno. H. Hodges,

Wellston, Ga., May 12, 1902.
Mr. S. K. Dill of Clay Hill, Ga.,
and several New York capitalists
have arranged to establish an exten
sive cattle ranch in Lincoln codnty.
The area will be 11,000 acres, and
cattle for the beef market will be
raised, and so far as practicable
Shorthorns and Herefords will be
used as breeders.
Iu speaking of the enterprise Mr,
Dill says:
“Yes, we are going into the busi
ness on a large scale, small at first
but increasing in size as we secure
patronage. We think that there is
money in cattle raising and that the
climate and pasturage of Georgia is
well suited for this industry. Our
company has all the cattle that
needs, and while we are not in the
market to buy all the cattle offered
us, we will not turn down a carloac
of good ones, such as we want and
the price is reasonable There
plenty of rooinun Georgia for enter,
prises of this character, and there is
no danger of more cattle being rais
ed than there is a demand for when
they are put on the market.”
