FEEDING AND CARE OF HOGS. Some people have as Idea that at most any sort of kitchen slop is good enough for a hog, and it is a common thing to give them stale, sour slops that have stood fbr. hours. But this should, never he. done. Let their food be wholesome and sweet, whether ob tained from kitchen or dairy; let it be fresh and clean. A hog will drink almost any kind of water; but do not conclude that, be cause mud and filth are natural to him, s he will thrive on them. StaJ^ surface water breeds, the germs of cholera and other diseases, and hogs that are allowed to use it are liable to contamination. Give them clean tfatsr in something so arranged that they cannot gdt their feet into it. Corn should not be supplied too bountifully, as its tendency is to over heat the animals. When fed sparing ly and along with grasses, it makes an excellent ration. A farmer who is looking for good results rom his swine, will not allow them to run and feed along the public highways, where the germs may. be conveyed to them by diseased hogs that- have previously gone that way. The best way to Bave a.herd in which cholera has appeared, & to immediate* fy separate the well from the sick. The old saying is "an ounce of pre ventive is worth a pound of cure." Men of , large experience have given their endorsement to Chioro-'Naptho- leum as a cheap, powerful and xkhv poisonous disinfectant. The use of this excellent remedy applied externally keeps down lice, and when mixed with the water and food proves an excellent internal medl. cine. Another important thing in the. oare of- hogs l‘s to see that they have good bedding, often renewed^ &o ale to keep ft as clean as possible. As soon as the old. bedding has been removed ahd burned, the premises should be well disinfected with Chloro-Napthoieum, or some other good disinfectant. Many cures have beet} tried for hog cholera, but the sur'est relief from this dread scourge lies in prevention. There are many good disinfectants. One of the best is Chloro-Napthaleum, and the free use of lime. A good solution is 40 or 50 parts of water to one of Chloro-Napthoieum. Take a large bucketful of this solution and thor oughly spray the animals and sprinkle the floor of the feeding pen. The Bacteriologist of the Iowa State Board of Health in May, 1898, made the following statement as to hog cholera: “This organism was found to be especially susceptible to the action of dhloro-Naptholeum: “One part in 250 killed growing cul tures In ten hours. One part in 600 prevented development. “Dry, but virulent, preparations of this germ were killed in 24 hours by immersing in water containing one part in 400.” Always remember that in the rais ing of hogs cleanliness and careful at- tention are very necessary to secure the best results, both as to the health- fulness of the animal and the result ing excellence of his flesh for food. GA. DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE. Road It in His Newspaper. George Schaub, a well-known Which Way Are We Educating. Items of Interest. To the careful observer and' About 4,475,000 persons are earnest enthusiast for a higher emloved in the world’s mines, and better life on the farm, there j Tt L vav «o ft °°“! s I ‘ h0 "? h i tr “ e ! aooJ^jKrJfe^lfe; world over in 1900. —are we educating toward the farm or away from it? We look at our primary schools, our high schools, and do we not see the tendency almost wholly against the farm? There is a remarkable development and interest in ag ricultural education in Europe, where it is common for agricul ture to be taught in every grade, from the primary school through the college, t What is the tendency in this agricultural nation of ours? Too often, we fear, away from the farm. The common school re cruits the academy, the college, the university; but does it recruit the agricultural and mechanical college,'or .do what it ought to re cruit the ranks of good farmers? May we not hope the time is near at hand when agriculture will be taught not only in the common schools, but the high schools as well? This is pre-eminently an agri cultural country, and yet our schools teach anything and every thing but agriculture, all of our education seeming to tend in ex actly the opposite direction from that of the farm. Agricultural education is con sidered of the upmost importance in all the co'untries of Europe, and is an important part of the school course from the primary grade to the senior claseesa. How much more important such a course of instruction is in America, whose whole future may be said to de pend upon the intelligent use of the varied soils and climate. Governor Hoard says: “Is there any good reason why this farmer’s school, the country school, should hot teach the farm boy the ele ments of agriculture; give him some knowledge of the technical terms he must meet in farm jour nals and farm books, and start him on the road to larger study and stronger love for farm live, and thus save him from deserting the farm? All over Europe there is a great revival of agricultural education in the primary schools; when that is done here, you will have larger use and destiny for the experiment station and the agricultural college.”—Dr. C. W Burkett, in Agricultural Educa tion. The Marks On The Packages. He says: “After using the Pain Balm for a few days my wife said to me, ‘I feel as though born anew,’ and ; before using the entire contents of the bottle the unbearable pains had entirely vanished and she could again take up her house hold duties,” He is very thank ful and hopes that all suffering likewise will hear of her wonder ful recovery. A HQIE-LIKEc HOTEL HAYING LEASED THE * The Philadelphia Times tells of the “break” made by a tot of the family who was one of a party of little girls at a recent strawberry festival in the vacinity of her home. She had been valiantly boasting of the manifold advantages of belonging to her family, and had managed to hold her own against the vainglorious and ingenuous discourses of her companions. They had gone from clothes to personal appearances, then to in terior furnishings, then to the number of tons of coal consumed in the home of each during the last winter, and finally , brought up parental dignity. The minis ter’s little girl boasted: “Every package that comes for my pa is marked ‘D. D.!’ ” “An’ every, package that comes to my pa is marked‘M. D. l’ ” reported the daughter of a physician of the neighborhood. Then came a fine snort of contempt from the hero ine of this ancedote. “Huh!” she exclaimed. “Every package that comes to our house is marked ‘O.O. D.!’ There, now!” The moiasses which is left as a residue from beet sugar manufac ture is utilized in Germany to make alcohol.
