By The. Judge.
If the preBeut weather* continues
throughout the week ninety per cent
of the cotton crop of this section
will be picked, ginned and sold.
Be it said to the credit of the
farmers,they are meeting their obli
gations well considering the Bhort
cotton crop.
' The pext thing in order will be
the grain crop, which will be a large
one. By sad experience most farm
ers have learned the importance of
wheat and oats. With meal selling
for a dollar a bushel in October it
would seem that there is something
wrong with our farming, and every
one with whom I have talked seem
to realize the importance of food
•products. No crop ever fails every
time for everybody. Last season
some failed to. make oats on account
of being killed in the fall, while oth
ers who sowed later made good
crops. Mr. H. E. Talton, who has
probably made more wheat for a
number of -years consecutively on
the same land, made almost a failure
last season, while Mr. J. H. Davis
made a very good crop. It won’t
do to quit because wheat, oats or
corn happen to be a failure. We
stick to cotton hit or miss and no
crop fails oftener to meet expecta
tions. Let us go to raising some
thing to eat, “Socks” may not agree
with me but I think we can rdise all
the ham we need without any cot
ton.

In the state election last week
Judge John S. Candler was elected
to the nnexpired term of Justice of
the Supreme court by a majority of
about 1,800 votes. Though defeat
ed, Judge Ross may be proud of
his Vote, he having received a ma
jority vote in a large number of
counties. Judge Candler had so
licited support and received pledges
throughout the state before Judge
Ross became a candidate. In this
defeat there has been no humilia
tion. In fact the vote polled does
not even carry with it a declara
tion of superior fitness. in behalf of
the successful candidate.

Grovania News.
ByJoeBedgo,
Maj, H. Benson, Secretary and
Treasurer of the Grovania Oil and
Fertilizer Co., informs me that they
have ginned and packed up to Octo
ber 3rd 1902, 954 bales of cotton
against 521 bales October 4th 1901.
While this is no indication of a big
cotton crop in our section, yet our
farmers have no room to complain,
but will say the bulk of the crop is
gathered. The doctor’s crop and
the preacher’s crop will be slim.
The oil factory commenced to grind
seed Monday, somewhat earlier than
last season, having I suppose a lar
ger quantity of seed-on hand. Gath
ering of corn, and sowing of grain,
I dare say will be in order another
week.
Mr. Joe Q. Ellis’ house is near
completion, and when the finishing
touch is applied will be a coflimodi-
ous residence.
It is said that we are to have a
marriage to take place in our town
in the near future. This is good
news, and a lovely month for the
occasion.

very sick, was advised to .be treated
by a surgical operatipn, and was ac
companied by her physician, Dr. E.
C. Brown of Hawkinsville, to Ma
con a few days ago for treatment.
There wasjquite an uproar oc
curred at the negro church near
Hayneville Sunday. An election was
held for their pastor, allowing sis
ters and all to vote, whereupon a
dispute arose over the vote, knives,
and pistols, clubs, etc., were in order:
nobody much hurt.
