Sea Water Affects Glass
Glass Is considerably affected by
exposure to sea water. The lenses of
signal lights on ships become covered
by a thin layer of sea salt which even
tually etches into the glass. The Unlt
~ed States bureau of standards In an
investigation of this subject has found
that lead glass was quite susceptible to
this corrosive action, while ordinary
soda-lime glass and boro-sllicate glass
are little affected.
Where Eels Breed
The bureau of fisheries s;t.vs thai
eels breed in salt water. The Ameri
can eels breed in water 'J(H) fathoms
deep off the southwest coast of Ber
muda. European eels breed within
a few miles of the same place. The
two species have never been known
to cross-breed. Young eels migrate to
fresh water. No American col has
ever been found in European waters
nor u European eel in American
stream s.
