Houston, Whose Peaches
Won Her Fame, Finds New
Lustre In Cement Deposits
Second Largest Plant In The Sonth Being
Built, To Open By March 1.
By W. R. Jordan in Macon News.
lloaston county's peaches have
made h?r famous in the past. In
deed, her peaches hare made her so
famous, that the county ii known
all ever the Eastern half of the
country, bseaunc of the excellence
|of her luscious fruit. There may
be other counties that have peach
es as good as these produced in
Houston, but none are better.
While her chief claim to recog
nition has been her peaches, her
future fame will have added luster
from a source undreamed of until
recent years, when it was found
that her luiids were rich in depos
its of mineral limestone.
The discovery of cement forma
tions led to the loeation of the sec
ond biggest cement plant in the
South, live miles east of Perry, the
county seat of Houston.
The limestone had been there
for nuteld ages, but like many
other ri(th resources of this won
derful South, no person gave spec
ial thought to the development of
the property until recent years.
Now it promises to become the
leading factor in the growth of
the county, in addition to her
wonderful peach crops.
At present, 200 workmen are
constructive tbe plant and it is
stated rapia progress is being
made. It is expected the plant will
be in readinebs for operation bj
next March.
The plant i? on the Southern
Railway. This road recently put
in 8,000 feet ef sidetrack to ac
commodate the business and it is
announced that the Central of
Georgia also may build a track to
the plant.
The Dixie Highway runs along
side the property. Tbe little town
of Coreen is adjacent, and already
is assuming an air of importance.
The Clinchfield Portland Cement
Corporation of Kingsport, Tenn.
are the owners of tb is property
consisting of 2000 acres of land at
this point, while a few miles north
lies 100 acres of what is said to be
the finest kaolin land in the South.
The plant is beiug constructed
of concrete by the spencer constrac
tion Company, of Baltimore. It is
estimated that the building ma
chinery and all equipment for op
eration, will cost in the neighbor
hood of $3,000,000. Iho present
plant is at Kingsport, Tenn,
As au indication of the extent
of tbe deposits, experts say there
is sufficient material for the opera
tion of 6uch a plant for 100 years.
It is stated that the plant will
manufacture 2,000 barrels o f
cement daily. The employees will
number 250.
