Book Club honors Ms. King
during Christmas luncheon'
The Wednesday Afternoon Book
Club held its annual Christmas
luncheon in the Garden Room of
the New Perry Hotel on Dec. 19.
Nineteen members wre seated at the
festively decorated table.
The President, Mrs. Vernon
Saxon, presided and welcomed Mrs.
J.L. Gallcmore as a new member.
The occasion was unusual and
Mrs. G.F. Nunn explained that in
tribute to Miss Martha King, our
deceased member, we were given
this luncheon by Dr. Allan King,
her devoted brother. He said Martha
requested this before she died and he
had promised to arrange it. She had
enjoyed and appreciated the club
during her short life in Perry and
wanted to give the Christmas parly
to show her gratitude and
friendship. We arc privilcdgcd to
have such a caring, compassionate,
generous family to choose Perry as
home. Miss Martha King will hold
a special place in our hearts and
Wednesday Afternoon Book Club
memories.

Spoiled food
can ruin the
holidays
Do you ever sniff a food to de
termine if it's okay to cat? Sniffing
will help you determine if the food
is spoiled - but your nose can't tell
you if the food can cause food poi
soning. Food spoilage and food
poisoning arc caused by different
organisms.
A major difference is the
temperature the two types of
organisms arc able to grow in.
Most food poisoning bacteria like
room temperatures. They don't di
vide and multiply at refrigerator
temperatures.
However, the organisms that
cause food to spoil (some bacteria,
yeasts and molds) can grow at lower
temperatures, even in the refrigera
tor at 40 degrees F. They make the
food look or smell "awful".
The bacteria that commonly
cause food poisoning arc not so
obvious. Most types of food-poi
soning bacteria don't cause foods to
smell or taste any different than
they normally do. You only know
they were there when you end up
with mild-to-sevcrc intestinal flu
like symptoms.
Thai’s why you need to keep hot
foods hot at least 140 degrees F.
And keep cold food cold, at 40 de
grees F or lower.
Foods, such as eggs, dairy prod
ucts, fish, poultry, meats and mix
tures of these can cause illness due
to bacterial growth, if left in the
danger zone (40 degrees F to 140
degrees F) for more than two hours.
Cream pie fillings fall into the
same category.
