Lewis offers answers to more questions
This week 1 have a few more
questions from readers of Horticul
ture magazine and answers by editor
Elsie A. Cox. 1 hope you enjoy
them.
Q. 1 have a six-year-old red
maple that started to lose its redness
two years ago. It is about seven feet
tall and in direct sun. What can I do
to gel it back to the original brilliant
red color?
A. By "direct sun," I assume you
mean the tree is receiving at least six
hours of full sun per day. In fewer
hours of sunlight, red leaf color
changes to green.
If your open site is in a lawn area,
that could be the problem. If you
fertilize the lawn, you must keep the
fertilizer well away from the tree's
root zone. Never apply lawn food
within three feet or so of the fullest
expanse of the tree’s branches (its
drip line).
Houston 4-H'ers participate in
statewide Fall Forum conference
The Houston County 4-H
Council met recently at Flint EMC
led by senior board officers Kathryn
Harris, Wendy Shirah, Brian
Collins and Marcy Haught. The
candy and smoked meats fundraisers
were culminated and several 4-H
members made plans to participate
in a community service activity by
raising money for the American
Heart Association in the annual
Turkey Walk held at Robins West.
Two project demonstrations high
lighted the meeting: Brian Collins
talked on guns and gun safety and
Taryn Asbcll presented information
on rccration at Camp Chatham.
Members were asked to help at
the annual training sessions for
school 4-H officers to be held in the
third week of December. Recreation
was led by Amanda Moncyhan and
refreshments were served to end the
meeting.
Several Senior Houston County
4-H members journeyed to Rock
Eagle last weekend to attend the
statewide Fall Forum. Marcy

Most lawn fertilizers arc high in
nitrogen, which is not good for
trees. It causes soft growth that is
more susceptible to disease, drought,
insects, and winter-kill. Too much
nitrogen also interferes with pigment
formation. !n fact, less available soil
nitrogen means greater red leaf pig
mentation.

I suggest you withhold fertilizer
from your maple for the next year or
two. Then feed it with a light appli
cation of a balanced, granular 10-6-4
spread on the soil surface just within
the drip line, scratched in lightly,
and watered in thoroughly.
Q. This year 1 tried without suc
cess to raise my own hybridized
daylily seeds. I sowed them in ver
miculite and kept them in my
greenhouse, watering as needed.
They came up but died in four to six
weeks for no apparent reason. Any
suggestions?'
A. When hybridizing in the hope
of producing new cultivars, begin by
harvesting the daylily seeds as soon
as they ripen (midsummer to early
fall). Since they benefit from a
chilling period, sow them in a pre
pared outdoor bed about November
or December. Mulch the bed or cover
it with burlap to keep the seeds from
values that hold families together in
today's society. The weekend was
highlighted by the annual winter
dance and the opening of the Hard
"Rock Eagle" Case.
Central District 4-H superlatives

the annual awards dinner. Receiving

Carefully remove the mulch or
burlap in early spring before the
seedlings emerge. If necessary, move
the little plants to a nursery bed
which has been deeply dug and
amended with organic matter and
coarse sand in full sun or partial
shade. Care for them in this spot for
a year before transplanting them to
their permanent site. Some of them
may flower the next season, but
most daylily hybrids develop flowers
two or three years after seed
germination.
