month and class will meet each

Beginning Water Color-Day
The Houston County Recreation
Department is offering a Beginning
Panthers, from 1B
point deficit in the Christmas tour
nament, while Peach County, and
Mary Persons also forced the out
side perimeter game to come into
play.
Perry handled powerful Jackson
twice with each victory coming in
the closing moments.
The Lady Panthers squad proved
skeptics wrong by going 17-0 in
region play and finished with a 22-4
record.
The squad went on to the quarter
finals of the slate playoffs before
bowing out to eventual state cham
pion Berrien County.
Perry had an inside duo of Cor
ranne Thomas and Deidrc Williams
with some outside shooting thrown
in by Melody Thornton.
Albertina Davis emerged as a
point guard that could pass to the
open person.
The Panthers wrestling squad
started out 0-6 for first year Head
Coach Tony Thrift's team in dual
meets but came back strong by
winning six of the last seven dual
meets.
Injuries played a major part in the
slow start.
Maurice Relcford was out with a
minor surgery and the rest of the
squad was relatively young.
But, the Panthers still placed five
grapplcrs in the state tournament.
Mike Jolley, Woody Greene,
Greg Winchester, Relcford and
Randy Mizell all were selected to
wrestle in the slate tournament.
The Panthers baseball squad had a
good year by winning region with a
victory over Robert E. Lee, Perry
had replaced the old coach with Tim
Simmons who guided his squad to
the slate tournament.
After playing in the state tour
nament against the Purple Wave of
Jayvee, from 1B —
"Chris King is a valuable defen
sive player. George Francis is an
offensive spark and he's real quick,"
Simon said. "We're in good shape.
We have nine spots on varsity next
year and we have confidence we'll
be there. Most people overlook us,
but we're the ones that work from
7:30 until 9:30 and that's a lot of
homework time. We have Eric
Richardson back and that will help
a lot when Michael Lane gets
tired."
Thornton feels this squad is
comparable to a Loyola-Mary
mount.
"Wc can put points on the board.
We're not a real big team," he said.
"One player that also contributes is
Hornets, from 1B
the successful campaign for Coach
Marvin Arrington's squad.
The Lady Hornets and Hornet
tennis teams also enjoyed a good
1990 season.
Heather Polls, Bristol Davis,
Nova Davis and Tasha Haley led the
Lady Hornets squad while Wade
Hardy and Terry Watson achorcd the
Hornet team.
Watson made it to the state tour
nament.
One of the most exciting
happening for Westfield was that
Coy Lassiter and Mark Eaton each
won state tides in track.
Westfield finished fourth in the
stale but Lassiter won the 100 me
ters and 200 meters run while Eaton
was the state titlist for the 400 mc

long year unless they leam how to
handle the pressing defense.
One bright spot has been the play
of Dcidre Williams. She has
emerged as a bonafide rebounder as
well as scorer.
She had 27 points in a recent
outing and made the Christmas
tournament All-toumamcnt team.
Some other bright spots are the
play the younger group.
Chasity Thornton has taken up a
little slack vacated by her sister

12:00 noon beginning January 8,
1991.

list. The cost is 5120 for eight
weeks.
Aerobics-Bonaire Area
The Houston County Recreation
Department is offering an Aerobics
class at the Ted Wright Park on
Moody Road.
Class is held on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. until
6:45 p.m. beginning January 8,
Fitzgerald, Perry came home lead
ing 1-0 with an 11-4 victory.
In the second game, Perry fell and
in the deciding game, errors cost the
Panthers a trip to Swainsboro to
battle Swainsboro High School.
The golf team finished fifth in
the state tournament in Helen,
Georgia after winning a region
championship.
Outstanding players off that squad
were Shawn Thrift, Scott Carnlcy,
Mark Branncn, Jason Griffin, and
Lonnie Elwood.
The Panthers thinclads won the
region as well, the team won the
Carrollton Relays as well as the
Jefferson Relays.
Forrest Johnson became a well
known figure throughout the slate
with a record time (46.73 in the
440) in one of his meets.
He went on to sign a letter of in
tent with the University of Geogia.
Ralph Thomas, as a freshmen
was setting record times in the 100
meters.
Darrell Johnson made it to state
with his triple jump abilties and
Jimmy Dunlap threw the discus all
the way to the state tournament.
The 440 relay team of Ortiz
Smothers, Thomas, Forrest John
son and Darrell Johnson also headed
for state for Coach Randy Padgett.
The squad finished runner-up to
Fitzgerald after trailing 36-6 but
rallied to fall 61-56.
Forrest Johnson won stale medals
in the 200, 400 and a member of
the state 400 relay squad.
The Lady Panthers thinclads sent
five members to the slate tourna
ment as the team finished runner-up
for the second year in a row.
Williams, Tamika Irby, Nikita
Simon, Tcris Flowers and Theresa
Calvin Davis. He plays real good.
He's picking it up. We proved a lot
of people wrong. Wc beat Dodge
County, Peach County and Central.
Last year wc had Arthur Billings,
Scan Duncan, Toriano Gilbert and
wc lost to these teams. This year,
wc had a 10 point lead (in the Peach
County game) and they came back
to lake the lead but in the end wc
had more breath than them. In the
Central game wc were down, I
think, 14-2, but wc came back and
beat them on their home court."
Both of the two players feels this
squad can continue the success and
finish with a perfect record.
"Wc haven't sec Tri-County,
Amcricus and Sumter County, but
ter race.
Shayne Arrington finished second
as his lime (11.7) was just shy of
that of Lassiter’s (11.63).
The Lady Hornets softball team
enjoyed a familiar winning team.
The squad again made it to the
state championship before falling to
Stratford.
The team finished with a 23-11
record after starting out the season
with an 8-8 record.
Westfield was led by All-Middle
Georgia nominee, Angela Santiago
at shortstop.
Christi Horsling led the team
with nine home runs and Allison
Latham pitched the team to one of
their best performances.
Six of the Lady Hornets were
Melody.
She has chipped in with some
big baskets that have kept Perry in
most of their games.
In many of the contests, the Lady
Panthers have jumped out to big
leads only to let them slip away.
Hopefully, Coach Kinchen has
worked on this over the holidays
and we will see a different team in
1991.
Westfield's Lady Hornets lost
their opening game but have re-
1991. The fee is $lO per month and
participants may register at any
class.

and tennis shoes. For more infor
mation, call 542-2075.

Taylor each went to the state meet.
The 1990 soccer team looked to
be an improved squad with the
addition of a transfer student from
Japan.
Aki-Hiro Omi was the mainstay
in the Panthers lineup.
After only scoring two goals in
the previous season Omi single
handedly kept the Panthers in each
contest.
The Panthers still finished with
an 0-5 record but things have started
to look up for the team in the fu
ture.
The fall brought about a new
athletic director and a new altitude
to the school.
Coach John Stephens guided his
football team to a 6-4 record and the
Panthers were one game away from
the playoffs.
With a new system, Perry's of
fense was that of a potent ground
attack with Robert Grace running
the show from the quarterback
position.
The team had upset wins over
Mary Persons and Upson County
and was on the brink of upselling
Americus in the season finale.
Three members had over 500
yards with Grace, Sclarvin Jackson,
Calvin Davis and Jamie Harris net
ted over 300 yards.
The Lady Panthers softball squad
finished with a 16-8 record, but was
eliminated by East Coweta in a rain
delayed tournament in Forsyth.
Now, the teams will look forward
to the 1991 school year with many
successful people returning to a
program that looks like success is
eminent for a long lime.
if wc go undefeated that should
prove to people that next year with
Arthur Billings and the rest of us, 1
predict at least going to state and
wc should win region," Simon said.
"Coach Thomas tells us wc played
good and that makes us feel good.
We want to show him wc can
play."
Members off the varsity squad
also help the jayvee squad out with
friendly piece of advice.
"Setarvin talks to us. Sometimes
he'll tell us we played bad and that
makes us feel bad, but when he
tells us we played good, that
helps," Thorton added. "I think wc
can go all the way."
named All-Region and three were
named All-Stale.
The Hornets football squad had to
overcome adversity and skepticism.
Many thought the 1990 football
team was much to small to com
pete, but with new Coach Todd
Curkendall coming in the altitude
of the players were very different.
Curkendall got his squad off to a
3-0 start and eventually went 7-4-1
before falling to Southland
Academy in Amcricus.
Success is eminent for Westfield
in every phase of the athletic field
and with many of the players re
turning, the goals set forth by the
coaches are not unattainable.
bounded to win the next three,
Christi Horsling has shown that
she is a dominant inside force.
Erica Graham has shown is a
threat from the outside and Tabalha
Goss has shown she can run the
leam.
April Horsting and Angela
Santiago have also proven they
could provide a spark offensively.
