Looking back: A thankful time
Once again we come upon the
time of year when it's customary to
reflect upon past events and to
make plans for the coming year.
As I reflect upon the past, I find I
have a lot to be thankful for. My
previous year has been remarkable.
I'm thankful for the opportunity
to begin again. Before the first of
the year, I was another aspiring
writer hoping for that big break.
That big break came in the form of
my present position here at the
Houston Home Journal. Granted
many of you would say it isn't that
big of a break. However, I'm opti
mistic. For me the position is a
turning point in my life. For that I
am truly grateful.
I'm grateful, too, for the oppor
tunity I've had to meet some of
Houston County's leading citizens
and public officials.
The county faces some tough de
cisions in the coming months. If
present officials are any indication,
residents have little to worry about.
They have made a wise and prudent
choice in selected those who will
lead. I've no doubt the decisions

Plus entries came from 19 other

Miles hurried home and without
saying a word to anyone, jumped
into the stream that traveled by the
grist mill.
WJien he came up out of the
water, Miles held the lifeless body
of his son, Charlie.
Charlie had tried to get a drink of
water on his own, fell in the stream
and got caught beneath the water

Miles Fields was my grandfather
and Charlie would have been my
uncle.
My mother said the death of little
Charlie changed my grandfather
forever.
Miles believed that only he could
find Charlie because God wanted
him to understand a strong mes
sage. And according to grandfather,
the message was that being a parent
is the ultimate responsibility and
alcohol has no place in anyone's
life.
Grandfather Miles gave up
alcohol and went on to be the proud
and successful father of 13 children.
He was an elder in the church, a
justice of the peace, a generous,
kind hearted man--the most

the best decision for those who
choose to call Houston County

Speaking of residents, let add that
I'm am grateful to have met Hous
ton County's biggest asset, its
people. It's the people that make
any place a home. Houston County
has an abundance of truly caring
individuals. The county's residents
make adjusting to to a new area that
much easier.

Webb said he plans to make full
results of the survey public soon.
We will report on it when he does.

Happy New Year!
respected man in his community.
Grandfather Miles was born in
1878 in a different, somewhat
"smaller" world.
His life revolved around the land
, and what his hands could do with
rough timber.
I never had the good fortune to
meet grandfather. But when I
happen to travel through Buck
Mountain, North Carolina, I see
churches and homes that Miles
Fields built.
But I think I will always admire
grandfather Miles for his courage in
dealing with alcoholism.
When little Charlie died,
grandfather could have crawled
totally inside of a bottle.
Instead he made a choice, a choice
that took him down a different path
in life.
Today, almost a century later,
alcoholism is still a problem which
affects millions of families in
America.
I think everyone could learn a
valuable lesson from grandfather
Miles and the tragedy of little
Charlie.
I am grateful for the helping hand
of friendships I've made along the
way. At times these hands have
been a lifeboat to an otherwise
drowning man.
I am grateful that as of yet
Americans can still look to the new
year with hopes of peace and pros
perity. Storm clouds linger upon
the horizon. But with any luck they
will pass calmly overhead. I join in
prayers that Americans abroad will
soon be home with their loved
ones. I pray that we as a nation can
begin moving forward and address
the problems we must deal with if
we are to survive the next century. I
pray that when the final bell tolls
for 1991, we as a nation can look
back and say it was a Happy New
Year.
