Clint Eastwood as veteran grand-theft auto cop Nick Pulovski is stunned to discover he has
been assigned rookie Charlie Sheen (David Ackerman) as his new partner.
Eastwood makes adrenaline flow in The Rookie'
By JACKIE K. COOPER

Clint Eastwood is back in the
"make my day" genre with a new
action filled, violence packed movie
called "The Rookie." He seems to
have gotten the need for artistry out
of his system with "White Hunter,
Black Heart" and can-now concen
trate on doing what he does best -
which is causing our adrenaline to
flow.
Charlie Sheen is along for the
ride as Clint's sidekick and for the
first time in several movies Sheen
is almost believable and almost
likeable. But maybe that is just
Clint’s believability/likability rub
bing off on him. If you stand in
Eastwood's shadow you get to share
some of his glow.
In the movie Nick Pulovski
(Eastwood) is a cop on the trail of a
car theft ring. When his first partner
is killed by evil villain Strom
(Raul Julia) he inherits David Ack
erman (Sheen) as his new buddy.
Animated adventure produces good funfor children
? By, JACKIE K. COOPER
HHJ Entertainment Critic
For the holidays we have another
story aimed for the children. "The
Nutcracker Prince" is an animated
romantic adventure which tells the
story of Clara and the Prince of the
Dolls. With Tchaikovsky's beauti
ful music in the background, the
tale of the handsome
Nutcracker/Prince and the young
girl who enters his enchanted world
is a potential treat for youngsters of
all ages.
But what sounds good on paper
doesn’t always work out that well
on screen. The story of Clara and
the Prince isn’t especially appealing
to young children, but the comic
battle between the "Mouseking” and
the Prince is. This is a segment
where the mice of Clara's house
hold wage war against the dolls of
her nursery. This is rollicking good
fun and produces scenes that chil
dren will adore.
But that is only a small part of
the story. A lot of time is given to
the attraction between Clara and the
Prince. They even share a romantic
ballet movement which should re
ally send the young kids over the
edge. Plus even for the adults it is a
clumsily animated sequence that is
also blurred on screen.
Another negative about the film
is the Tchaikovsky score. The mu
sic is performed by the London
Symphony Orchestra and is beauti
ful to hear but it has no relation to
what is happening in the animated
story. If ever there was a mismatch
of sight and sound, this is it.
A positive aspect of the film is
the actors' voices that speak the
parts. Megan Follows who played

extra calories.
Adult sitters
Home health aides work in the
home to care for adults. They may
prepare food, take blood pressure
and other vital signs, provide trans
portation, do grocery shopping, as
sist with grooming and dressing,
and simply be a companion and
friend, say experts with the Univer
sity of Georgia Extension Service.
This sets up some scenes of old
cop/new cop friction but of course
every thing works out in the end.
Aiding Strom is Liesl (Sonia
Braga), a woman who is every bit
as relentless as her evil leader. In
some aspects she is even more dan
gerous than he especially when it
comes to her torture of Nick. In a
complete reversal of the helpless
female, leering male encounter we
have forever seen in movies, this
time out it is Braga who takes ad
vantage of the bound and helpless
Eastwood.
One of the unsolved mysteries of
the film is why the sultry swarthy
Julia/Braga are cast in roles of
Germans. They don't look that na
tionality nor act it in any way. But
I guess there is no typecasting by
country in Hollywood these days.
The movie contains enough ac
tion and violence to knock Bruce
Willis off the screen. There are car
chases, plane chases, foot chases,
and motorcycle chases. And just
"Anne of Green Gables" for the
Disney Channel is Clara. Keifer
Sutherland is the Prince. Phyllis
Diller is the "Mousequeen" and Pe
ter O'Toole is "Pantaloon," one of
the Prince's chief aides. Each of
these actors gives a full characteri
zation to his/her role.
The film is rated G.
The worst flaw of "The
Nutcracker Prince" is how pale the
animation is when compared to the
work of the Disney Studio or even
the Bluth animators. These
"Nutcracker" guys just aren't in
their league. And with "The Res
cuers Down Under" showing some
of the best Disney work ever in an
imation, this movie is just a poor
relative in the world of rich anima
tion.
Some children might enjoy "The
Nutcracker Prince" for short seg
ments. But most who would enjoy
the mice scenes will tire of the full
effect of the movie. And adults will
not be attracted to the film by the
animation. So the potential audi
ence is not there for hit status.
I scored "The Nutcracker Prince"
an unanimated 3 out of 10.

because this is a movie about cops
does not inhibit anyone or any
thing. Bullets fly freely with no
thought to the rights of the
individuals our cop buddies are pur
suing.
All of this violence earns the
film an R rating. To make sure it is
a solid R, Eastwood and Sheen
speak in mostly four letter words.
For its type, and I stress that
qualification FOR ITS TYPE, the
movie is exciting and exhilarating.
Nobody plays the "law unto itself’
like Eastwood. Nick is definitely a
first cousin to "Dirty Harry" and
young Sheen is a willing apprentice
to the role of maddog cop.
"The Rookie" is a wild ride
through the night streets of San
Jose. Buy your ticket, settle back
and hold on to your hat. This
movie roars along at a breakneck
pace and I mean that literally.
I scored "The Rookie" a glossy 5
out of 10.

’Short Time’ has laughs and substance
By JACKIE K. COOPER

"Short Time" is a comedy/drama
now at your video store which was
in movie theaters for only a short
time. It is a special type of movie
that needs a unique selling job to
find its audience.
The trailers for the movie painted
it as a complete comedy and ignored
the heart grabbing aspects of its
plot. Thus movie audiences went to
see it expecting a laugh a minute
and were generally disappointed to
find it had more substance than
that. Don’t make that mistake when
you pick up the video; this is a
movie with laughs and more.
Dabney Coleman stars as Burt
Simpson, a cop only days away
from retirement. When he goes for
a medical exam to qualify for some
new life insurance his records are
confused with another man’s. This
results in him being told he is ter
minally ill.
As a result of this knowledge
Burt resolves to be killed in the line
of duty which will entitle his ex
wife, Carolyn (Teri Garr), to receive
three hundred thousand dollars with
which to car for their ten year old
son. It also forces him to re-exam
ine the priorities in his life.
Coleman is such a consummate
actor that he can pull off the com

The film could have been suc

"Sesame Street” have a duo of that
same name?). But by bringing in
the always delightful Teri Garr as
his ex-wife and the charming Kaj-

moves forward another notch and
becomes human as well as comic.
One trivial point to observe when
you watch the video; Teri Garr

The film is rated PG-13 for brief
nudity, violence, and profanity.
"Short Time" is a movie that
gives you more than you would
ever expect. It has humor, action,

surprise but you get it totally when
Coleman recites a re-evaluation of
