Perry wins,
Hornets fall
one year ago
In 1990 on this date, the Perry
High School Panthers used 65
points from the combination of
Jake Smith and Ken Sikes to roll to
an 83-64 victory over the R.E.. Lee
Rebels.
Sikes had 30 points while Smith
led the Panthers with 35, but Coach
Carl Thomas said after the game
that he thought anybody that paid
money was cheated for Perry’s first
half effort.
But, it was the first region game
for Perry who improved to 4-2 on
the year and 1-0 in the region.
In the Lady Panthers game, Dei
dre Williams had 18 points, but
Melody Thornton and Corranne
Thomas each chipped in with 12
points to lead Perry past the Lady
Rebels 52-38.
the win improved Perry's record
to 4-3 on the year and 1-0 in the
region.
Tattnall broke out to an early lead
and coasted to a 76-46 thrashing of
the Hornets.
Westfield trailed 16-4 early in the
contest, but closed to within four
points at 22-18.
Tattnall used their dominant size -
and outscored the Hornets 10-2 to
take a 12 point lead into the half.
John Gamble led the way with 10
points and Coy Lassiter chipped in
with eight points in a losing effort.
The Lady Hornets dropped a close
50-46 game to Tattnall but played
the Lady Trojans much better than
they did earlier in the season.
Trade Dunaway tied the game
early and Bristol Davis gave the
Lady Hornets a 22-21 lead with a
charity toss, but Tattnall charged
back to take the victory.
Angela Santiago led the Lady
Hornets with 13 points.

Westfield struggle in scrimmage
with the Windsor Lady Kniqhts
By J.J. COOPER
Special to the HHJ
The traditional Christmas feast
may have taken a slight toll on the
Westfield Lady Hornets basketball
team.
Returning from the Christmas
lay-off with a scrimmage against
the Windsor Lady Knights, the
Hornets struggled slightly as they
fought fatigue in a two hour
scrimmage.
"Christmas has away of getting
you out of shape," said Hornet
coach Donna Campbell. "I don’t
think we picked up right where we
left off, because we're not in as
good shape as we were when we left
Stratford."
But despite the need to get back
into shape, the Lady Hornets
showed improvement in several ar
eas that Campbell has worked on
during the Christmas lay-off.
Chiefly, the Lady Hornet’s press
and defense was more consistent
against the Lady Knights.
"Our press is looking better and
better every time we get on the
floor," said Campbell.
Against the Knights, the Hornets
forced several turnovers, but some
times failed to follow up with a
basket.
"We got a little tired and couldn't
put the ball in the hole late (in the
scrimmage)," said Campbell.
But overall, the Hornets had a
successful scrimmage, as Christi
Horsting helped the Hornets domi
nate the game from inside.
"Overall, we looked a lot better
this time then the last time we
scrimmaged them,” said Campbell.
Campbell and the Hornets entered
the Christmas lay-off with three
main goals— improve the consis
tency of the defense, develop a pos
sible eighth person to come of the

Edwards has been averaging 10
points over the last three games and
has given the team that added scor
ing punch.
Hayward's quickness may be a
key for Perry's chances. He will be
given one of the assignments for
containing Little.
He scored a season high 24
points against Dodge County in his
last outing. He also netted four 3-
pointers for Perry.
Setarvin Jackson has also come
on to give the Panthers some of
that much needed scoring punch
averaging just under 10 points a
game.
But, Sikes has been the go-to
man for the Panthers as he has av
eraged over 30 points the last three
games including a season high 36
points against the Dodge County
Indians.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. tonight

The scrimmage was the Hornets
last tune-up to work on these goals
before they return to action Friday

Bench depth was probably helped
the most by the scrimmage, as the
entire team had a chance to play in
a game situation.
