Church services, help
to mark Thanksgiving
BY BRENDA THOMPSON
Staff Writer
As has become tradition,
Thanksgiving will mean good food,
special church services and family
gatherings for people throughout
Perry and, in fact, the entire coun
try.
It’ll also means a couple of days
off for many and some long volun
teer hours for others as different
groups throughout the county are
planning special holiday packages
for shut-ins, elderly and needy fami
lies in the area.
According to Lt. Beth Anderson
with Houston County’s Salvation
Army, her group and 25 or so vol
unteers will be doing several things
this week in observance of the holi
day, from adopting out families that
are in need of food to taking over
the Thanksgiving Day Meals-On-
Wheels program.
“So far, we’ve adopted out
around 60 area families for Thanks
giving and will be delivering boxes
of food to them on Wednesday,” Lt.
Anderspn said during a telephone
interview on Monday. “And, on
Thursday, we’ll get together and
cook Thanksgiving dinner for 50 or
more Meals-On-Wheels partici
pants.”
Ari agency of the United Way,
Lt. Anderson says that the county’s
Meals-On-Wheels program tradi
tionally shuts down on Thanksgiv
ing Day and her group fills in with
the help of several private individu
als and volunteers. The adopt-a-fam
ily program is also operated primar
ily by other organizations, clubs
and private individuals who have
called in throughout the year and of
fered their support.
For more information or to vol
unteer, local Salvation Army rep
resentatives can be reached at 922-
2226.
In addition to the efforts of the
local Salvation Army, headquartered
at 113 McArthur Boulevard in
Warner Robins, several local
churches are planning special activi
ties for the holiday. One church,
Perry United Methodist Church and
its youth group, for example, spent
much of the day Tuesday delivering
fruit baskets to the church’s more
than 70 shut-in members, while
another church, St. Patrick’s *
Catholic Church, and it’s parish
spent much of the week putting to
gether and delivering turkeys, food
and toys to dozens of the area’s
needy and poor.
Other groups heavily involved in
helping the holiday’s needy include
Perry’s Project Agape Love
(P.A.L.) and Loaves and Fishes, a
community-sponsored food program
for the needy housed at Perry’s St.
Christopher’s Episcopal Church.

County residents will have to

water department and public works
office on Kings Chapel Road
beginning Jan. 2, 1994, instead of

"The driving force (behind the

currently occupies in the courthouse
will be taken over by the clerk of
superior court when she moves to
the Kings Chapel location.
Also, anyone wanting a building
permit or business license will have
to apply at the new office.

Dead animals revive flap
over dumping of sludge
By VETO F. ROLEY
Staff Writer
Deaths of three animals at the
farm of Jimmy Hanner two weeks
ago has rekindled the controversy
over the spreading of sludge in
South Houston County.
Hanner, who found a dead cow,
raccoon and beaver on his farm,
questioned whether runoff from a
neighboring farm owned by Dr.
J.R. Bloodworth where sludge had
been applied was responsible for the
deaths of the animals.
However, James Summerville, a
representative of the Georgia Envi
ronmental Protection Division
(GEPD) said that sludge had last
been spread on Bloodworth's farm
in March, 1993. He added the
investigation was still continuing,
with the office waiting for test
results to come back.
"We looked at the Bloodworth
farm," said Summerville, "and
didn't see any evidence (of problems

Stafford added the office was also
transferred to "reduce some of the
traffic in the courthouse." He said
courthouse security has become
more of a concern, and this should
help.
"There will be no decrease in

said adding that the other functions
of the public works department are

The beaver and the raccoon were
taken by the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources for autopsies.
Results of the tests were not back
as of Tuesday, Nov. 22.
Summerville said that sludge and
sludge spreading sites had to meet
state regulations in order to be ap
plied to farmland.
"Spreading sludge is safe if done
under the guidelines,” said Sum
merville. "Both the sludge (spread
in South Houston County) and the
site (Bloodworth's farm) were found
to be acceptable.”
The Houston County Commis
sion looked into a proposal to mon
itor the spreading of sludge, on the
basis of anew state law allowing
the county to charge the owner of
the land where the sludge was
spread and company spreading the
sludge tipping fees to spread sludge.
