Another cause of Christmas de
pression, said Singleton, was not
being able to provide the right
Christmas presents. "We all have
unrealistic expectations," he said,
adding that those expectations could
not only lead to a depressed state,
but also to a feeling of failure.
Rev. Shipley added that a main
cause Christmas depression was
"bitterness turned inward.” He said
that people could be bitter about a
great loss and about their circum
stances.
Christmas depression could also
be caused by chemical or physical
reasons, said Rev. Shipley.
"Nothing really causes depres
sion," said Rev. Shipley. "It sets
the stage for depression." He added
that depression came from our reac
tion to outside events. He noted
that the same events that depressed
one person, would have another
"finding positive things and even
rejoicing."

Singleton said the best cure for
the Christmas blues was to "find
someone to talk to. Try not to
spend it (Christmas) alone, even if
it means going out to a restaurant
to eat"
"Someone (who is depressed)
tends to want to be alone," said
Rev. Shipley. "However, they need
to be with people who care about
them."
Another cure for the Christmas
blues, said Singleton, was for the
person to do something they en
joyed. "They should find something
to do that makes them happy,” he
said, adding that the main thing was
to "get out."
Rev. Shipley said the best cure
for Christmas depression was to
"understand what it means to be
loved by God and have a personal
relationship with Him."
However, Rev. Shipley added
that people who were depressed
often had a difficult time seeing
God's love. "The often have to see
the love of God through other peo
ple," he said.

Patrol, from 1A
The troopers on the road, said
Hancock, would be stressing DUI
enforcement. "We are going to be
out there looking for them and en
forcing the DUI laws," he said. "If a
person is caught driving under the
influence, it might ruin their holi
day season."
"We are not abandoning normal
traffic arteries with these special pa
trols," said Georgia Public Safety
Commissioner Col. Sid Miles,
who ordered the change in patrol
patterns. "But, we are serving no
tice on criminal elements who
would prey on homes in isolated ar
eas that a trooper or local officer
may be just around the next bend.”
Miles also said that he expected
around 30 people to die on Georgia
roads over the Christmas and New
Year's holidays. He said an addi
tional 900 might be injured in
2,400 accidents.
The Christmas and New Year's
holiday periods will be shorter this
year, due to the holidays falling on
