Death notices
Mary Elizabeth Ward
Mary Elizabeth Ward, 77, of 821 Woodsdale Drive, died Tuesday, Jan.
11,1994 in a Macon Hospital. Bom in Texas, she had resided in Perry for
the past eight years. She is preceded in death by her husband, Vinnon A.
Ward. Mary is the daughter of Kellogg Hawes and Estelle Johnson. Mrs.
Ward was a membewr of the Perry United Methodist Church and was a
homemaker. Survivors: daughter, Kay Bailey of Perry; sisters and
brother, Helen Harcrow of Buffalo, Texas, Doris Neal of Waco, Texas and
Joseph Hawes of Tulsa, Ok.; 3 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Services: The funeral was held in the Watson-Hunt Funeral Chapel on
Tuesday, Jan. 12,1994 at 11 a.m. Dr. Marcus Tripp officiated. Interment
took place in the Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington, Texas on Friday,
Jan. 14, 1994. The family suggests contributions be made to The
American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
Willie James Porter Sr.
Willie James Porter Sr., of 1047 King Circle, died Friday, Jan. 7,
1994. Bom in Houston County, he attended Houston County public
schools. He was a member and deacon of Davis Hill Baptist Church in
Fort Valley. Survivors: children, Betty Jean Walker, Wilma Newberry,
Patricia Williams, Leon Porter and John Willie Clark, all of Perry, Lizzie
Mae Rudolph of Andover, Md., Helen DeJesus and Major Authur Porter,
both of Columbus, Patsy A. Paulding of Morena, Calif., Rutha Mae
Jackson and Willie James Porter, both of Warner Robins, Alvin Porter of
Dumfries, Va., Bobby Porter of Clinton, Md., David Porter of Evans and
Fredrick King of College Park; brother and sisters, Preston Porter,
Mildred Solomon, Maggie Walker and Agnes Haslem, all of Warner
Robins; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Services: Were held Thursday, Jan. 13,1994 in the Davis Hill Baptist
Church at 3 p.m. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Tlte Rev. E.
L. Clark officiated. Bobby E. Glover Mortuary in Perry had charge of
arrangements.
Mrs. Hazel Harris Jones
NEWNAN-Mrs. Hazel Harris Jones, 67, of Third Street, died
Wednesday, Jan. 12, 1994 at her residence. Bom in Carroll County, she
was a member of the Amco Baptist Church. She was employed with
Shaw Industries in Newnan. Survivors: daughter and her husband, Mr.
and Mrs. Joel Anderson of Perry; sister, Christine Earley of LaGrange,
brother, Clemit Harris of Newnan; granddaughter, Amy Anderson of
Perry.
Services: Were held Friday, Jan. 14, 1994 in the Forest Lawn
Memorial Park at 11 a.m. the Rev. Travis Eidson officiated.
Henry Clay Thornton Sr.
UNION POINT-Henry Clay "Billy” Thornton Sr., 63, of 305 Veazey
St. died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 1994. Bom in Green County, he lived the
past 13 years in Union Point. He was a retired fixer for Chipman Union
Manufacturing. He was the son of the late William Clay Thornton and the
late Annie Love Thornton. Survivors: wife, Virginia Farr Thornton of
Union Point; sons, Henry Clay Thornton Jr. and Stephen Alan Thornton,
both of Union Point and William Lee Thornton of Elkhart, Ind.; brothers
and sister, Robert E. Thornton Sr. of Union Point, Thomas Thornton of
Kathleen and Ann T. Hogan of Warner Robins; and six grandchildren.
Services: Were held Friday, Jan. 14, 1994 in the Bethesda Baptist
Church Cemetery in Union Point at 11 a.m. The Rev. Lem Clark
officiated. Callaway Funeral Home in Union Point had charge of
arrangements.

Perry United
Methodist
Debbie Mcllrath presented the
program on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at
the Perry First United Methodist
Church as they started their fellow
ship suppers for 1994. Mcllrath
sang to the delight of an audience of
over 200.
The Mcllraths are well known in
the Perry community. She and her
husband, Jim, served on the church
staff for a number of years. He
served as youth director from 1974-
77. They went back to Asbury
College for two more years and re
turned in 1979. Debbie served as
music director for the youth while

Caricature maps
of Perry will be
available soon
Perry's historical landmarks,
major businesses, churches, schools
and professional offices will soon
be spotlighted on a hand-drawn
caricature map which will be made
available to the public.
The locations will be displayed
on a 18x24 inch keepsake pictorial
of which 10,000 copies will be
printed and distributed among
participating businesses and the
Perry Area Convention and Visitors
Bureau.
Fay Tripp, Executive Director of
the C&VB said the maps will be
given or sold through the Welcome
Center, used with incoming groups
and conventions and taken to trade
shows. Tripp stated "These
keepsake maps are popular with
local residents and visitors alike,
because it is colorful and shows a
picturesque aerial view of our
community".

Houston County elementary and
middle school principals want to
help parents raise the richest kids in
town, kids that abound in the most
desirable qualities.
To help accomplish this task,
the local principals are bringing au
thor and motivational speaker Dr.
Billy Mitchell to Warner Robins on
Feb. 17. He will be kicking off his
new program centered around rais
ing the richest kids in town.
Mitchell is a former elementary
and secondary school teacher, coach
and principal. He has also served as
superintendent of school systems in
Alabama, South Carolina and
Maryland, and has held an assistant
professorship at the University of
Alabama.
"Last year our elementary asso
ciation felt like we needed to do
something for parents," said Patsy
Hutto, principal of Perry Elemen
tary School. She said the associa
tion decided to bring in a nationally
known speaker to speak to the par
ents.

Auditions set for talent show
The first-ever Kiwanis Talent
Showcase, sponsored by the local
Kiwanis Club, is slated for March 3
at the Perry High School Audito
rium, according to Elaine Stephens,
show chairman.
The competition benefits the
Kiwanian Scholarship Program.
Prior to the contest, interested
persons will audition on dates to be
announced. The event has three
levels: Class C, first through sixth
grades; Class B, seventh through
ninth grades; and Class A, tenth
through twelfth grades.
Each class will have a winner,
although only the winner in Class
A will advance to the district com
petition to be held this spring.
The Perry event will be open to
all youngsters in school in Houston
County and follows state guide
lines. Except for an accompanist for
an act, each contestant must be an
amateur. No act my include more
than five individuals, including the
accompanist
In planning an entry, partici
pants must limit each act to a max
imum of three and a half minutes.
Professional judges will evaluate
each entry on the basis of show
manship, presentation and talent.

our children be the best," she said,
adding that his advice would be
"practical."
Tickets for the event will cost
$2. Hutto said the event was not a
fundraising event, with the ticket
prices going to cover expenses. She
added the association didn't take in
enough last year to fully cover ex
penses in sponsoring the event.
Hutto said tickets will go on
sale Jan. 24, and are available at all
elementary and middle schools.
