Carrollton, Sept. 8,1807. According to previous notice a large portion of the etti^ns of Carroll county inet this day in the court house, for thi purpose of taking such action as the con dition of the (ountry requires. On motion, Judge A. O. Embry was call ed to the chair and B. M. Long requested to act as Secretary. On motion. W. W. Morrell explained the object of the meeting. On motion, the following named persons were appointed a committee to report busi ness for the meeting, to-wit: W. W. Mor rell, R. L. McCurdj% Jesse Gray, Aaron Brown, Thos. Enterkiu. James Bryant, J. K. Barr, A. T. McLendon, Jas. W. Webb, Michael Goodwin, T. 31. Kelly and John Lee. had belonged; and showed plainly that the split in the Charleston Convention was lie blamed the Union men for falling into the current after Secession. Although he had, alter contending as long as he could safely for the Union, volunteered and went into the service, and wanted to whip the light, but all the time believing be was doing wrong, and now thought if wc all would do right, we were far better oil'than if Secession bad been a success. lie u the people, all who could do so, to vote unitedly for a being disfranchiM'd. He concluded amid rounds of applause. His speech had a marked effect; the people seeming to say, well done our long trusted friend and neighbor. G. W. Merrill next being called on, ad dressed the meeting ably and at some length in favor of uniting with the “Union Republican party of Georgia.” Ills sjwecli was well received and loudly applauded. After urgent and repeated calls, A. C. Borden came foi ward, and in a short and effective speech urged the people to accept the terms now offered by Congress, and pointing to the National llag, told them to stand by the llag and government of the United States as their only safety. He told the voters to vote from principle, ;.nd if they could not Indorse the principles, to vote against a Convention. He was o A ) posed to policy voting, as that had been well nigh over run. Ills speech was list ened to with considercable interest, us this person is an effective speaker. The coinmittee returned, and through W. W. Merrill, their Chairman, reported the following resolutions, which unanimously adopted: WmtRKAS. It is desirable that there should be harmony and unity of uctlon among the friends of Reconstruction throughout the .State: and whereas, restoration to peace and civil government in the Union can be had only through the great Union Repub lican party outlie Congressional plan; and whereas, in the opinion of this meet ing a rejection of the terms offered will lead to a Author disfranchisement of the present white voters and perphaps conlis- cation, therefore, llettolted. That we hereby adopt the plat form of principles established by the Union Republican State Convention, hold In the city of Atlanta on the 4th day of July last. Resolved, That the friends of Reconstruc tion throughout the State, regardless of past political differences, are earnestly so licited to co-operate In the great work now before us. lie solved. That It Is the duty of every lover of his country to maintain the honor and dignity of the Government by oppos ing all measures leading to a repudiation of the National debt. llesolted, That the Atlanta Opinion*, and all papers friendly to reconstruction, bo requested to publish the proceedings of this meeting. Before the passage of the resolutions 3Ir. IV. W. 3Ierrell fully explained the object of the resolutions, which was to make com mon cause with the Union Republican Party of the State. He advocated the doctrines of the party in contradistincti<9h to radicalism North and South. That while radicalism North wanted disfran chisement of all who engaged in rebellion and general contlscation, Radicalism South, while ’professing to be the peculiar guardian of our rights and honor, yet their course was the only one that world bring on the South the evils they should try and avert. lie showed conclusively that should the opposition succeed in the Government, it would entll anarchy and endless evils on the country, and that we should all come up and aoccpi the questions settled by the highest earthly tribunal—that of anus. The meeting was one of the largest poli tical meetings ever held in the county. All seemed to'tie frilly Impressed with tho importance of doing their duty to their country and In this grqnfc emergency. On motion the meeting adjourned. A. O. Embry, Chairman. B. M» Long, Secretary. Tnn TninuxK on Amnesty.—The Tri bune says of the expected proclamation of general amnesty: Tho President's amnesty proclamation Is expected In a few days.
