or battle, religious persecution, concubi
nage, proscription for opinion’s sake, and
other relic, of the Middle Age* should
now give place to the more enlightened
views and humane Instinct* of a Christian
meople. It ha* alway* been * source of
-mortification and *bame to every true
American, that one of the signers of the
Declaration of Independence, yielding to
the exactions of a law which survived that
revolution of Ideas, died In prison wherein
ho had been thrust for debt.
Credit Is based upon one of two things,
or both combined: First, confidence In
the integrity of the debtor, and second, Ills
-ability to meet his obligations. The first
without tho second, never paid, and never
■ can pay debt*. Tho second without llic
first may be/owed to pay, but not by Im
prisonment. Ills property should bo held
liable. This m»y be sold, and the debt sat
isfied. In all such cases. Imprisonment is
unnecessary. And If a man be Indebted,
but wholly unable to pay, It mattet-j little

The Imprisonment of Such a man makes
[him ho moro nor no less honest, but a great,

Every good citizen will applaud, theror
