Evidently the Southern I, doing an
express train job—a sort of Southern
"Limited." "Start today and arrive
tvjien you get there" 1. the Idea.
The writer went out the other day to
liuve a look at the Job.
Actively engaged In nibbling away
at the dirt were two full-grown men.
A mule leant In the distance was evi
dently i«art of the "force.!' As on evi
dence that It waa a rush Job, the South
ern. ur somebody, had a inan stationed
near by. Whether he waa there to
keep people from falling through the
holes In the bridge or whether he waa
keeping tab. on the two men nnd two
mulea, the writer did not aslc. Jila
chief occupation aeemed to be that of
chewing tobacco, which was quite le
gitimate. but did not hurry the bridge
construction.
Tint writer is no expert on estimating
the lime required to make excavations
oud pul up concrete bridges, but It Is
off-hand opinion that, at the pres
ent rate, the Brookwood bridge will be
completed Inside of 99 years, though
not far Inside.
In the meantime the resident, of
"Further" Brookwood are taking tliolr
chances with what la left of the bridge.
They have Inadequate facllltlea for
crossing ami they are of Ihe opinion
that the old rattle-trap la going to tum
ble down with some of them.
Then they anticipate some morbid
pleasure In suing the Southern, but
they would a IRUe lather have no
grounds for a suit.
Their requests are moderate. They
only want a bridge. The picture allows
the’ obvious Impossibility of driving
I down one side of the bnnk and up the
other. So they feel that their demand,
are moderate w hen they ask for some
thing on which to cross—something
better than the decrepit affair which Is
now provided. Also they would like It
within the next ton or tlflcen years.
It Is the railroad's next move.
