By PERCY H. WHIUNO.
We want to oa.v, riirht fiera ami now, that the eolumni of
the gporting pajri> of The Georgian are open to the amateur ball
players of Atlanta and the vicinity.
A little later 011 it i« likely that the matter will be taken up
more in detail and it will probably be neeeaaary to waate several
columns in telling the press agents of the various teams to write
on one side of the paper only, to write pro|>er names clearly and
a few such.
But in the meantime, just help yourself. Ship your notices
> to The Georgian, sign them aa an evidence of good faith and they
will appear.
The time has come when the amateur ball player begins to
fidget around and wonder what team he is going to play with
and a few things like that.
In one way Atlanta seems to be pretty far behind several
Southern cities—notably New Orleans and Memphis and that is
in the number of its amateur ball teams, the number of grounds
on whieh they can play, and in the organization of the teams
and leagues.
Memphis has a well organized city league with its own parks
and regular weekly games In addition there are several less
important organisations such as the Saturday Afternoon League,
thu Railroad League and a few more. In New Orleans there are
innumerable leagues and they play all summer and then all winter.
Atlanta had a Commercial League last year whKh played
through a successful season and several first class uniformed
teams in addition. But amateur basebnll in Atlanta has not
reached the stability that it has in other cities and anything
which The Georgian can do to buifd it up will be done.
Aamateur baseball deserves just as much encouragement as
professional baseuall—maybe more.
The athletic games you take part in do you a lot more good
than those you go to watch. No exercise is botter or more
healthful than baseball and it ought to be encouraged in every
way possible.
It would not do any^harm if the triyy bestirred itself ami
provided a lot of first class diamonds at its various parks in the
city. Other cities do and they are a great Rource of enjoyment
to the players and the people who go out to Ree the games.
Of course there are a couple of "skate” diamonds at Pied
mont park but they are not kept up as they should be and there
seems to be no system of reserving them.
There is a big opening for our baseball mayor, and if lie
wants to make himself more solid than ever with the baseball
contingent he ought to polish up a bunch of city diamonds and
turn them over to the amateurs.
The Illinois Central Railroad and some Gulf steamship lines
are said to be behind the scheme to start racing in Cuba jmd keep
it going. Thiels agreeable as long as Cuba has a separate gov
ernment, but it will not add to the popularity of Mr. Harriman’s
recent acquisition if Uncle Sam ever solves the Cuban problem
by taking over the island.
Hie racing game backed by a railroad which in turn ia con
trolled by the popular nibs, £. II. Harriman, would certainly be
a bit with the people of this country.

Georgia Begins Practice
With Largest Squad Ever
In the new Southern League schedule a vast improvement
has been made by dispensing with the foolish morning games
which used to be played on the holidays. Morning games draw
just about like a last year’s poultice and arc usually attended by
the members of both teams and the representatives of the press.
Nashville’s "holler” for some good dates seems to have
been productive of results. The Rock City draws an opening at
home, a Decoration Day doublo-header and a Labor Dnv double-
header. ——— ■
