MHHHWPMP 12 ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEWS. SATURDAY, MARCH 2, 1907. ! UP-TO-DATE j OF SPORTING NEWS WORLD NEWS OF SPORTS EDITED BY I PERCY H. WHITING not news, but views I ATLANTA BASEBALL TEAM FOR THE SEASON OF 1907 IS BETTER THAN THAT OF 1906-READ THE DOPE IHIIlllllTrftt By PERCY H. WHITING. Well, tilts day end* the last week of spurtinir imiftivity in tli<> South. '"it|, tin* new week will conn* tin* arriviil of the New York Anierieans. Kitrlit days from today the Atlanta team arrives. Thirteen days from today the first exhibition name will lie played. Well, we are all triad. It has not been swell a terribly dull winter ui the spurt ini: way. but we are riyht here to welcome the eoiniuy of something a little, more lively. -olumn the writer has tried to answer the often Is the Atlanta team stronger this year than it ampliation!I.v in the ofliriiiatire. • There In another asked ipiestion, was Inst The nns’wer is no donhtiin* it. Harritig the dent put in the twirling staff hy the return of Hughes to the New York Anierieans. the team is stronger all down the line. Even with the pennant staff of pitehern At lanta has a good elianre at the pennant. And as lias I remarked before, Atlanta has not shot. her'last shaft at the visible supply of twirlers and may, land another wonder yet. The fans can look forward to the coming season with en tire confidence. Hilly Smith has selected for them a good team and one which looks ns mu eh like tt pennant winner as any team ever looked at the beginning of the season. That is not saying that Atlanta will win tin- pennant. Con ditions beyond human control enter into the making of a pen nant winner and we don't know whether or not luck is to he with us. Hut right now Atlanta-to-heat-any-team-in-the-league" is as good n hit as any gambler could want. We note with relief that "Chesty Charles" Halih Inis re turned to Memphis anil given out the statement that the coming Southern League pennant race is to he the closest ever wit nessed in Dixie. From the way lie talked over here everybody thought that he hail the pennant sewed lip in his pocket and that the fun was ail over before it ever even started. You cannot ngure It out any way in the* world that Atlanta 1* weakened except In the lo*a of one pitcher and one catcher. And even that loss I* cut down to one, for who expect* to ml** Archer with Sid Smith, the league's cham pion batter, doing the backstop stunt? So, really, the one Irreparable loss is that of Tom Hughe*. But for all that the Cracker* of iso7 will be a far stronger aggregation than the Crackers of 1906, and Infinitely better balanced. Sid Smith and O’Leary' or Sweeney will make a catching staff without a superior In the league. A* has been remarked some sixteen times before,’ Fox Is the best Ural'base-' man of the league, and Jordan Is tho best second baseman. Castro for Utility Man. Ball and Castro will light It out for short stop and either man will make a better shortstop than "Whltey" Morse. place—not If Ball comes anywhere near up to expectations. In fact. Castro seems slated In the role of utility man. This has not been definitely announced from club head quarters, but tt Is unofficially piped off that the local team would like to get along this year with four pitchers and carry a utility mun In place of the fifth pitcher carried last year. Of last year's slabmen Zeller can lie counted on for two games a week. So can Spade, provided he makes good. Harley and Sparks are only "one- game-men." or, at best, cannot he counted on for more than three games In two weeks. How Ford or Schopp would be like ly to stack up against two games a week, provided they make good, re mains to be seen. Schopp Is no heavy weight. but he Is an experienced pitcher and might be able to do It. However, 'to return to the line of lope: In the outfield there Is George Win ters. who Is as good as anybody's right tickler. Probably Paskert and Broker will bo tlu* other two, and It is Billy Smith's belief that they arc both stronger than the two men they suc ceed. Ah to the pitching staff—well, Zeller, Sparks and Hurley arc going to be bet ter Ilian last year. Why do we think so? Well, chiefly because It pays to be optimistic. There Is no earthly reason, though, vvhv Zeller nnd Sparks, «t least, should not lx* better than hist year. Tlu* “Rube" had everything. In base ball parlance, except confidence. And surelv be will get that from playing. And It looks tlds year as though Zel ler would have a team which would ln- hplre any man with confidence. Sparks is coming. laist year he was green. This year he has more experi ence. Barring accidents, he ought to be a better man this year than last. Hat lev may •‘come back;” Spade t* looked upon as a good, reliable man: Fore! did well last year; Schopp is a man with u good record and. moreover, a southpaw. Ills batting and fielding last year were phenomenally good. of’course, the pitching stuff is minus Toinmv Hughes, and that is the only gap which cannot be tilled—that Is, l unless Uhirk Griffith shells out. or | t'levcland, or some other club, which I wants to train at Ponce th*Leon park f next spring does the right thing by Smith. behind th* . llu* ua-fiL ‘.UN had II Tlu* -tl k .
