The lmsdmll season is on. Nothing has happened .vet blit we are waiting, ttir mid you can’t mistake the symptoms. It is in the New York Americans are due Tuesday night. And front Wed nesday morning, when the Highlanders begin practice, until late next September there will be something doing in the baseball line. , Clark Griffith seems to have stacked up against it pretty stout. Is Chesbro gives up bnseball and if Hal Chase plays in dependently the Highlander chief will have trouble in routtdiug out a good team. Here’s wishing hint luck. The hackers of the New York team have gone out and spent the money and they are entitled to better luck than they are having. “DeArntond and Drcnnnn will probably not he with me this season.” writes our old friend Mike Finn. “I have about closed a deal in which they figure. "I have secured 11. K. Corkill from the Minneapolis club. He is*an outfielder.” • Finn is'going to give Little Rock a ball club this year. Wall'll what we tell you. He has turned the trick before mid this is the time he repeats. Arthur Herman, the long. Inuguid pitcher of the Nashville team, has applied to President Kavnnanglt for a berth as um pire. Herman was^n good pitcher in his day and might make an umpire. Jimmy Smith, the Memphis sccoud baseman, lias been given his unconditional release. At his prime-Jimmy was the best in the business. But he .just would fiddle with the juice of the festive corn berry—and now he is mi the haNeball market again. Too had. The South has never seen a more graceful second baseman or a more aggres sive hall player than Jimmy Smith. Vanderbilt and I'niversify of Nashville baseball clubs begin practice today. Regular work begins at Tech. And so it goes. In many of the colleges farther South work has advanced unite a hit and it will not he long before the college teams are playing ball. Atlanta Will Be Strong In Tennis Championships With tht* dates of nil Important ten nis championships announced. South ern players are beginning to take n lively Interest in the tennis prospects for the coming season. The season opens, as usual, with the Gulf States championship nt New Or leans May 27. The next Southern tournament Is the Virginia State cham pionship. June 10. Then follow: Tennessee Stute championship at Nashville. June 24. Southern championship at Atlanta, July 2. Georgia State championship nt Ma con. July 8. Houtli Atlantic States championship nt Augusta. July 15. As was the case last year, the four greatest Southern events are run In series so that ull players can start with the Nushvllle tournament und finish up In Augusta, playing tn the four championships between June 24 and July 18. Atlanta will be strongly represented In all of the Southern tournaments, with the possible exception of the Vir ginia championship. Nat Thornton and Bryan Grant will undoubtedly go to New Orleans to de fend their doubles and singles titles. I#a*t year local players were beaten In the Nashvllel event, hut they will go back aguln this year, probably in larger numbers than ever before. The Southern championship In At lanta promises to Im* a warmer event than ever before. It Is tho belief here that Heuhon Hunt will return to de fend his title, but he will certainly find the game faster than he did lust year. The fact that the winners In doubles and singles are to Im* sent to compete In the National championship nt tile ex pense of ihe Southern Lawn Tennis Association, will draw to Atlanta not only the pick bf Southern tennis play ers, but doubtless some of the North ern and Eastern stars as well. Local players wll doubtless have a try at the Georgia Stato and South At lantic chAinplonshlps. Little, of Cincinnati, hold* the singles championship of Georgia and It is not known whether or not he will defend the title. Hunt and Lee. the Univer sity of Michigan team, hold first hon ors In doubles. It Is doubtful If the doubles team will defend. Judged by the present nutlook, the Smith will have some tine tennis this year. and. ns usual. Atlanta players may- be expected to cut more figure than the players of any oilier city. Ac cording to the oRIclal ranking. Atlanlk has ns many good players as any two other cities combined, and these play ers will doubtless hold their own this year, us they .ltd Inst.
