For Atlanta the coming of Clnrk Cirifllth's train marks the
opening of the baseball season. From now until September things

the various amateur diamonds of the city. At Ponce DeLeon, it
may he mentioned casually, the activity will, for a few months, In-
confined chipfl.v to carpenters and those engaged in the pastime of
erecting a- grand stand and bleachers and in leveling a playing
field.
The merry bunch of Highlanders, some seven strong, depart
ed front the Flatiron Building Monday afternoon and caught the
4:25 over the Pennsylvania. /
The. New York party consisted of Griffith. Danny Hoffman,
George Moriait.v, Ira Thomas, Willie' Keeler, .lack Kleinnw, Wal
ter Clarkson and Trainer Mike Martin. At Philadelphia WTd
Conroy wns taken up: fit Washington Jimmy Williams joined,
anti at Lynchburg, Vn„'Al Orth was enlisted. The remaining
C lovers will arrive Wednesday by the routes that pleased them
cst. ,
Unlike the Giants the Yankees will start very quietly and
there will be no strenuoVlsity about the early training.
Manager Oriflith plans to work his men lightly for awhile
and not run any risks by playing games or doing foolish stunts
before the men are in 'condition to stiyid it. If the team gets to
work Wednesday and the weather continues good the Yankees
will have eight days of actual work and a Sunday of rest be
fore the first game with Hilly Smith's aggregation.
The Atlanta players are expected to turn up any minute now.
They do not have to report until Sunday, but some of the young
sters and new men are likely to be on hand several days in ad-
vanee.
And Hilly Smith will lie glad to see them. He feels like
doing u little outdoor work himself and wunts to have some
body to do it with.

manner In which dl*|***fd of Frank \

"Whlley" Morse.
"Hall and fnatro will tight It out for
•hortitop, ami either man will make a bet-1
ter shortstop than Whltey Mom*," you j
sav with evident nssurnuee.
He's a g<*«»d bull player all right; makes a
heap more fuss than Whltey nud the bleach-
erltes get a lot of fun tint of him. but. on
]*•*; form, lie'll never ante up with the
must be had Idugles as Whltey can.
Ilall?
Hon't know anything about him. except
what some official tor unofficial t avqftiges
say. Ho you?
Maybe he’s better than Whiter.
If he Is, Atlanta will have a devilish good
shortstop. I lotto he Is.
It Is undoubtedly a fact that Whltey
played long enough In Atlnntn for Ills own
g«**l. The change will do him good, and If
ball really Is liettef the change will do At
lanta good. This yawp Is no protest against
the deni or iiguinat your dictum. It's Just
a little tribute to otie of the most capable,
most conscientious and most courageous
players that ever Haunter nn "A" on hla
breast. It Is coining to him for past per
formances.
And ns to the future: If you'll Just feel
of Uube Zeller's. Baxter Sparks* or Dick
Harley's pulse when Whltey comes up to
the^bat this year with the score tied and n
man on third, you’ll be wise to another
little tribute to the Dutchman. These
pitchers know a pinch hitter when they
see him. A. O. F.

Special to The Georgian.
University of Georgia, Athene.
March 6.—Coach Ktouch Is ronndluj b!i
University of Georgia haaebnll squad into
great shape. Ho Is only having one troq.
bk\ and that Is In determining which tori
to tin can and which to retain on tb«
aqmid. I
There Is so much good material that It
Is proving quite a task to decide who to
put In a given place. The mnterlnl here
this year Is by far the beat In the his-
tory of hnsebnlt at the university. Cnae|
Htoueh. who has been coaching Mouthers
college teams for the Inst seven years, d*.
eliires that the material nt Georgia this
year Is the liest he haa ever aeen iu the
South. *
This year Stonch began a month
on the squad than he did Inst year. Thl«
gives a good lend on the sen sou. which will
go n long way toward winning games.
That this month hna been put to go,*! I( .
count la evident.
To begin with, there were sixty-lire r*n-
dldntea out for places, nttd that numb*
haa been cut to forty. The forty will hare
to be pared conatderahly yet. although twe
full teams with aubatltutea will be kept
during the entire aeason. The second tens
will have a regular schedule of Its own.
At preaent, the candidates for the vnrloci
places are:
Catcher*. John Rrown, captain of th«
team: It. Hodgson, Kelley, Lowndes, l.nm,
Mlneban and Fleming, brown hns mtcbrr
cinched, of course, bat two sab-entchert
will most probably be carried during the
entire season.
The pitching staff will be unusually
strong this year. There are twelve m-a
out for this place, so there will be m
trouble In supplying the box. The men not
for pitcher nre Harry Hnrmnti. W. Ilmira,
Hugh Host wick, C. E. Frlnaon, W. E. EM-
stain. Frank Foley, W. J. Fielder, W. fJrlf-
lith. Dick Grave*. W. H. Hatcher. J. E.
Rcdfcrn and R. Reott. Of this number, the
four who look best JU thla stage «»f tbs
game are Hary Harman, Drown, Itc*
fern nnd Frank Foley.
At first base, the candidates are Fraxl
Rodgers, Ruas Leo. John Co-art nnd A. D.
I>eas. Lee nnd Court nre showing th«*
form, bat chance* «oom to favor Lee.
At second base. It Is almost a sure thing
that L. L. Derrick, last year's second
man, will hold down his old Job till* year,
although J. Davis, McElhnnimn and dll-
ln»rt are nil showing up well for tha
same position.
At short, Frank Martin, i played ox
the 1906 team, but was out . . college !a»t
year, will most probably perform, Dtbof
candidate* for this position nre Brantley,
Taylor, Walker nnd Reynold*.
For third base, Fleming, M. Ilod**o«,
Grave* nnd Williams are running neck ani
neck, so the winner can not he picked yet.
For the outfield, Marcus McWhortt
Watson, Callaway, 8. Ilatchcr. Jegcr, Tej-
lor nnd Rocock are the candidates. Tb*
only certainties In this crowd are McWhor
ter nnd Watson. McWhorter, on *<
of his batting and fielding Inst year

open place In the Held will In* tilled 1*7
