STEEL WORKS SHUT DOWN; ' 3,000 PERSONS MADE IDLE Philadelphia. March •.—The Midvale Steel Works, the great competitor of the steel trust, and holder of enormous government orders for armor plate, shut down most unexpectedly at noon yes terday. Tbe 3.000 employees were told to go home and not report until further notice. Heyond denial that tho abut-down was caused by financial embarrass- ment, absolutely no statement of causes was made by the officers. The work men were entirely In the dark as to reasons for their dismissal An explanation from apparently n good source was to the effect that th# trouble wn* due to a tight Midvale had had with the Pennsylvania railroad over car demurrage. The company had not emptied Its cars und th# railroad Imd charged them against It. The steel works refused to pay and the Pennsyl vania railroad locked all Its switch#* entering the yards, so that not u car could b# moved In or out. There was no coal to run the plant, and s<». pend ing settlement, the works had to shut At the Pennsylvania office# ment was made that "there between us and the Midvale the stnte- ls no war ’ompany." f AT TOE THEATERS Plunger."
