The Duty of the City of Atlanta in Preventing Tuberculosis •y OR. R. R. KIME. There are but few people outside the lac an untold maaaure of peace, com medical profeMlon that fully under' atand the naceaalty of local orgmnlsa- lion and active work In proven tine tu berculosis la AUasta. Whan theta la an average of about IM deatha annual ly with probably Tit or IM cases of consumption In the city durine the year It Is easy to understand the urgent necessity of dotnc somethin! to pre vent the spread of the disease. The city Is Brewing rapidly, becom Ins more densely populated, shotting off sunlight and fresh air In same pro portion and unleM some active meas ures are taken disease, degeneration and tuberculosis will Increase. It is very Important that the city au thorities and public-spirited dtlsens should plan well for the future protec tion ot Atlanta. Inei den tally we would urge the ne cessity of small parks for rest, recrea tion and fresh air ror the people and playgrounds for children. If Atlanta hopes to build well for the future they are a positive neoeMlty and will not only prevent disease, degeneration and tuberculosis, but Improve the moral and, physical character of the cltlsens and _ one-half, even one-fourth, the amount lost yearly by the one disease, tuberculosis, was spent In establishing a system of small parks, playgrounds aad Instituting means and measures for the prevention of tuberculosis tt would be a saving of thousands of dol. lars annually to the city besides pre venting disease and suffering and add- fort and happiness to the people of At lanta. The Associated CharltlM. prompted by noble motives for the good of At- the treatment of tuberculosis, ft Is worthy of the earnest co-operation and support of the cltlsens and city not only to foster and sustain It, but add other dispensaries In other sections of the city. The Instructions, training and treat' ment received at these dispense rise will be of great benefit In preventing ' . heir special advantage Is In checking the disease In Its Inclplency and leav ing the patient at his home. Many for their families and could not possi bly go to a sanatorium. Another Important point they are taught how to take care of themMlvM and prevent giving It to other people end especially members of thslr own family. , Dispensaries are certainly one of the most Important factors In the cure and prevention of tuberculosis In the city. The city board of health Is also an Important doctor In preventing the spread of the dlseaM, yet they can not accomplish much without the co-oper ation and support of the cltlsens and medical profession of the city. There should be a general public sen timent back of the bodrd of health, so as to aid It In accomplishing efficient work. Every case of consumption should be reported to the city board of that health, so that with the co-operation of the physician, the family and board of health the disease cgn.be prevented * «n spreading. Unity of action Is Ini. and should bsLaecured, then the ot bedltb can oe a very Impor tant factor In controlling tuberculosis A sanatorium for tuberculosis cases Is essential for the best Interest of the city. The home of th* Incurable With proper assistance ran care for the rase. nursing and attention, but there other and larger class wblch must bs cared for by dispensaries or a aanato. rtum. Some can bs bandied at tltalr homes through tho'dispensaries, while others to secure the Met results need a plage to stay. It need not be very elaborate and axpaostve and should be oat eome dis tance from the city, on dr near a car A few hundred acres of lend with e central building, then tents or shsds can be used for most of tbs patients. Such a place properly equipped in a few yean oan be made principally self, ■uatatnlng. Another means of preven tion which would be far-reaching In Its results Is Instruction In the public schools, especially In the seventh or eMth grades. Every teacher should be instructed aa to mode ot propagation, manner In whlcb It apraada and means of prevent. Ing tuberculosis, aa wall as other con tagious diseases. A pamphlet setting forth the above points In* regard to tuberculosis and other contagious diseases should be written In plain, simple language, so as to be easily understood for use by the teachers In the seventh or eighth grades of the public schools. The pamphlets should also be furnlabed the children to take home with them so that the parents could also see and read them. Such a course to a few. years would develop a class of cltliena fully awake to the beat mtarests of the city and preventing disease. Then there would not be any trouble In gening proper medical Inspection of all school chil dren so as to prevent disease, and cor rect defects in vision, healing and other abnormal conditions, in a few yean matters would be reversed and the city would apand more money In preventing crime, vice and dlsaoaa than It now spenda In trying to cure and control eamti Cities aad people are slow to get tbalr eyes open aa to means of 'prevention. The taw of cause and effect In crime, vice and dlseaM are such that the city er people failing to head them must pay for thslr apathy and Indifference. This law la no reepector of persons or caata. each must bow to the Inevi table when they violate Its mandates. It seems most people are prone to eln and suffer rather than put forth a little effort and prevent that which their batter judgment and duty dic tates they should do. ' In concentration of forces and unity of action In the tight dlrectlcn much good ran be accomplished for Atlanta. The time Is propitious, the opportunity la now at hand for an organised effort to combat tuberculosis In our midst. Every cltlMn la Interested, every cltl- aen Is In denger directly or Indirectly end duty call* for action. Indifference, neglect and Inaction mean future disease and suffering.
