Following tho recent attempt of the street railway conductors and motor- men to form an organization, and the discharge of several of the men, J. D. Crenshaw, formerly a conductor, but who states that ho has voluntarily left the company, has written a statement in which he defends Alderman James L. Key from President Arkwright’s charge that Mr. Key had stirred up strife among the men. The statement from the former mo- torman, voluntarily given to The Geor gian, follows: To the Editor of Tho Georgian: There has been so much In the papers about the recent stir among the street car men and so much Injustice been done that I ask you to print this state ment. I am one of the promoters of the as sociation which the street car men tried to get up and was among tho first to sign tho paper. There had been some talk among thrf men for a long time ahum getting up the association und "e did not know how to go about It. We knew that the company iyas much ‘•i'posed to any sort of organization and would chop off the men connected with it unless we got a strong membership Mojv they found It out. We thought If we could get a large number of the non to sign for the association that they would let us alone. It was necessary to have someone to fix up our agreement and start us right, ar.d Mr. James L. Key was selected because some of the men knew him and those that did not know him per- s 'Hally knew that he had always been !l friend to the working class of people. asked Mr. Key to draw our pa- l“Ts, and let us come up to his office and sign them up. He agreed to do it, and did do it. As goon as the company got wind of lb- matter they set spies to watching the men and as fast as men were seen anywhere In the neighborhood of M: Key’s office they were notified to >! v off and go to tho superintendent’s office and there they were suspended or dropped. Some of the men were allowed to * rk on If they would withdraw from v ‘• association; others were dropped entirely. I was allowed to work on tnyself, while some who had less to do "hh it were discharged for good. This v is not right; to discharge these men ln this manner, without any Just cause, and the company will find It out. There nothing done by any one of the * n that was not perfectly upright and honorable. Checking Up l Chicago Branch Show Several Discrepacies.
